Overview
"The Mission of the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES) is to provide an opportunity for students in Ocean County to become critical thinkers and problem solvers. Students of this academy will participate in an intimate, integrated, and challenging curriculum with a focus on marine and environmental science. MATES will empower its students with skills important to post-secondary study and employment in a global community." MATES' staff, students, parents and community partners have been instrumental in developing the mission of MATES since our full time program was established in September 2001.
Our mission reflects three major areas of focus as part of our Middle States Accreditation for Growth. Our focus includes: academics, critical thinking skills, and community service. As a result of its commitment to improve student performance in these three areas of focus, MATES has received accreditation from the Middle States Association and Colleges and Schools. Our mission also encompasses that of the Ocean County Vocational Technical School District which is to "prepare students for job placement or further education leading to successful employment." Our focus will produce leaders in the science, technology and the environmental fields, as well as other related fields.
We are also a member of the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools for Math, Science and Technology (NCSSSMST).
