    OCVTS HOLDS NURSE CAPPING CEREMONY
    Jean Sullivian, March 24, 2016

OCEAN COUNTY, NEW JERSEY -Ocean County Vocational Technical School (OCVTS) recognized fifty-seven Practical Nursing students for their completion of over 868 hours of training in the first half of the comprehensive nursing program. Each student received the traditional nurse’s cap from their instructors at the ceremony.

The students are scheduled to complete their training in July. At that time students will be prepared to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) to be certified as a Licensed Practical Nurse. A practical nurse is trained to care for acute, sub-acute, convalescent and chronically ill patients under the direction of a registered nurse and/or licensed physician.
The OCVTS Practical Nursing Program was the first program offered at OCVTS and began in 1959. It is approved by the New Jersey Board of Nursing and the Department of Education. The program, located at the OCVTS Toms River Center, has a very competitive admissions process and class sizes are limited. It is the largest vocational technical-based nursing program in New Jersey.

Forty percent of the program is devoted to classroom theory and laboratory. The remaining time is devoted to clinical experience, a vital part of training. OCVTS has established agreements with over a dozen local hospitals and health care facilities which provide valuable opportunities for students to gain experience and apply classroom theory. The clinical rotations also provide networking opportunities for employment after graduation.
