STUDENT NOMINATED
FOR CITIZEN-SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARD |
TOMS RIVER – A student in the Marine Academy
of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES), was
selected as a nominee for the national Wendy’s
High School Heisman Award. MATES is a full-time high
school division of the Ocean County Vocational Technical
School.
Nicole was nominated for the recognition by MATES
Vice Principal Peg Roma based on the student’s
“academic aptitude, athletic talent and exceptional
commitment to her community.”
The Student has served as student government president
and is a member of the National Honor Society. While
a full-time MATES student, She is a member of the
varsity swim team at Southern Regional High School
and has earned varsity letters since her freshman
year. The student is involved in various environmental
projects. She volunteered for grass planting and joined
teams in the clean ups of rivers and beaches. She
also has served as a nursing home volunteer. This
past summer she studied Marine Resource and Park Management
in the Caribbean islands of Turks and Caicos. The
project was sponsored by Boston University’s
program, The School for Field Studies.
“We believe it’s important to celebrate
success in all facets of life,” said Ms. Roma.
“The Wendy’s High School Heisman showcases
the diverse achievements of students,” she added.
Created in 1994 through a partnership between Wendy’s
and the Heisman Memorial Trophy, the program annually
rewards youth excellence.
