The program offers intensive study in theatre, dance, and voice for the young artist-in-training. Courses include concentration in tech-nical theatre, acting techniques, directing, bal-let, modern and jazz techniques, choreography, music theory, vocal health, song preparation, and arts history for each discipline.
Performing Arts Academy students are academi-cally challenged with 160 credits required for a high school diploma.
Our students are encouraged to continue their education in the arts after graduation, but will also be given the tools and resources to audition for professional companies. Students interested in a competitive and challenging environment must complete the necessary application proc-ess, which includes an entrance audition.
The Summer Experience
This two-week workshop provides an opportunity for aspiring young artist to strengthen their area of specialty– dance, voice, or acting.
Each day begins with an intense session in the major area of study. A half hour lunch break is followed by two, 45 minute workshops in the other two specialties. Through exposure to these three performing arts disciplines, the student has the opportunity to improve as a well-rounded young performer. Our students will develop an appreciation for each art form. The last day of the workshop is a day of perform-ance. Parents and friends are invited!
During the workshops, students receive instruction from master teachers in:
Acting: The theatre arts program is composed of both acting techniques and monologue/scene study. Actors are required to bring a memorized monologue from a published play for the first day of the workshop.
Voice: Voice instructors will coach students indi-vidually on solo repertoire as well as in an ensem-ble setting. This process will build healthy vocal technique and appropriate characterization.
Dance: The dance summer program is geared to enhance the technical training of a skilled dancer in Ballet, Modern, and Jazz techniques while gaining an understanding of dance theory and history. A minimum of 6 years of continuous dance training is required for grades 6-8 and a minimum of 8 years for grades 9-12.
