The first year provides an exploration of several health career options. The curriculum covers anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and key concepts in health care such as professionalism and ethics. Basic patient care skills such as body mechanics, bed making, transferring patients and personal care, i.e. feeding, bathing and oral care, are covered. A clinical experience is provided at a long-term care facility. The second year is geared toward the student becoming a Certified Nurse Assistant. The curriculum and clinical experiences are mandated by the State Department of Health and Senior Services. Upon successful completion of the 90 hour program the student may take the two part state exam to earn their certification as a Nurse Aide and may qualify for a work-study program offered through OCVTS. the Certified Nurse Aide curriculum is a good foundation to help prepare students for a career path in Nursing. Other components of the class include membership in HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), a student organization emphasizing professionalism and leadership skills for students who are pursuing a health career. An affiliation with UMDNJ allows qualified students to earn college credits while still in high school.
