Forest Resource Education
Center (FREC) is located in Jackson Township in northern Ocean
County.The FREC strives to teach and practice forest
stewardship - managing New Jersey's forest resources so that
we have healthy trees and forests, clean air and water, and
places to learn and enjoy the outdoors. Photo

Free Interpretive Programs
|
The Interpretive
Center provides educational programs for groups at the
FREC uses the forest as a living outdoor classroom. Groups can
call to schedule a free interpretive program. Tours include
hands-on activities, games, and hikes tailored to the needs of
the group. Choose from 12 natural resource subjects.
The interpretive center also has three
self-guided interpretive trails for families and scouts. Trail
guides are available at the interpretive center.

Seedlings for Reforestation
|
The New
Jersey Forest Tree Nursery utilizes 45 acres of the site
for the propagation and production of more than 300,000
seedlings annually for reforestation and community forestry
programs throughout the state.
- Purchase seedlings -
anyone who owns land in NJ is eligible to purchase
seedlings in packets of 100 per species for reforestation.
- Today's Acorns = Tomorrow's Trees -
collect acorns for the nursery to grow tomorrow's forests.
- Seedling Packet Program - a packet of 50
trees. Choose for riparian buffers, wildlife, or Arbor Day.
- Third Grade Free Tree Team - every
third grader in New Jersey is entitled to a free tree
seedling when requested by the local school.

Project
Learning Tree is an award winning environmental education
curriculum for educators of students PreK - 12. Professional
development and free in-service workshops are available
statewide. Each participant receives PLT supplemental
curriculum materials designed for specific grade levels and
learning objectives.
Volunteer
at the FREC get involved in many different ways - planting
trees, assisting with bird surveys, helping with educational
programs, collecting seed, and maintaining trails. Everyone's

Frequently Asked Questions

When are the trails
open? Trails are open daily, dawn until dusk. The
interpretive center and nursery offices are open Monday-Friday
8am to 4:30pm.
Are pets allowed on
the trails? Pets are allowed on a leash - please
clean up after your pet.
Do you give tours
daily? Tours can be scheduled for groups of 10 or
more during regular hours. Families and scouts are invited to
attend our two festival days Spring Conservation Day and Fall
Forestry Festival. These festivals are held on Saturdays and
feature many tours, demonstrations, and exhibits.
