Why should I enter the Challenge? Am I
eligible?
First place teams will travel
to a wonderful and exotic ocean location for a week of
science, education, surf, fun and culture. In
2007, the First Place trip will be to the British Virgin
Islands! There will be a First Place prizewinner
for each division from each region, QuikSCience-West and
QuikSCience-East! Second place teams will receive
an exciting 3-day trip to either the USC Wrigley Marine
Science Center on Catalina Island (for QuikSCience-West)
or the Sandy Hook Marine Lab on the south New Jersey
shore (for QuikSCience-East).
QuikSCience-West is open to
all middle and high schools in Southern California (from
Santa Barbara County south). QuikSCience-East is open to
all middle and high schools in the New York/New
Jersey/Connecticut tri-state region. Each school
can register two (2) teams for each division (middle
school and/or high school). Teams consist of six
students and one teacher/mentor. All team participants
must be at the same school.

What is the QuikSCience
Challenge?
The USC Wrigley Institute for Environmental
Studies and Quiksilver, Inc. have created an exciting
new event in science education. The Challenge is a
multi-faceted competition for teacher-student teams that
takes advantage of kids’ love of the oceans to spark
their interest in science and the environment. The
Challenge also seeks to foster leadership qualities in
young people through environmental awareness and
stewardship. There are two Challenge competitions, one
in Southern California and one in the NY/NJ/CT tri-state
region. Each competition has 2 divisions, one for middle
school teams (grades 7-8) and one for high school
teams.

What does the Challenge involve?
When does it happen?
QuikSCience Challenge
projects will include the creation and teaching of a new
ocean science lesson plan for other students, a
community service project that is linked to the new
lesson plan, a proposal for a research project (high
school only), a written report/portfolio of the
QuikSCience project, and a creative presentation
(poster, computer generated, video, or
multimedia).
