Summer
Reading Project

Dear
New MATES Student;
I
hope that you are enjoying the summer break and are
getting ready to become a part of the Marine Academy
family starting in September. The program is entering
its 14th year and will have all four high school levels
represented including our full-time and established
shared-time programs.
As
a new member of the shared-time Marine Academy, you
will be required to read the following book prior to
the start of the school year. If you are entering
our afternoon session, marine science II (environmental
science), which will be our ecology and introduction
to environmental science, you must read "Ishmael"
by Daniel Quinn.
If
you are entering the morning session (marine science
class) you may choose
-
"The Sea Turtle: so excellent a fische"
by Dr. Archie Carr
-
"Sea Change" by Dr. Sylvia Earle
- "Twelve
Days of Terror" by Richard Fernicola
- "Close
to Shore" by Mike Capuzzo
The
books should be easy to obtain and could be borrowed
from the Ocean County Library system. In all cases,
students in either the morning or afternoon session
must write a reactionary essay the chosen book that
details your thoughts. The essay should be 2- 3 pages,
double spaced and 12 font. The essay must be turned
in the first day that you report to the program. The
dates will vary based upon the school system opening
date.
Please
enjoy the summer and let me know if you have any questions
or concerns. My telephone number is (609) 978-8439 ext.
4002 or e-mail: jwnek@mail.ocvts.org. Thank you.
