During the 4th Marking Period of the 2004-2005 school year, the students in Mr. Clarke's Vocational Computer Science Class spent lab time creating or updating real web sites for real non-profit organizations as a community service practical real-world excercise.
Students contacted non-profit organizations to suggest changes to their web sites. Students practiced techniques of good web site design and used the computers and software in the lab to work on updates to the web sites.
Students did some internet research looking for organizations that needed web help and contacted the organization offering assistance. Only students with parental permission participated in the live project.
Other students brainstormed and came up with ideas to create useful sites like “recycle NJ” where NJ residents can go to get local or county recycling information, “video game review” to inform parents of suitability of specific video games, or a site describing “good web site design” with links to and descriptions of other sites we consider great examples of good web site design.
