The scope of this course deals primarily with residential one- and two-family dwelling unit electrical systems. Renewable energies and commercial wiring are touched upon. The fundamental theory and application of alternating and direct current circuits, test equipment, transformers, motors, and various types of control devices for power, and lighting are emphasized. Load calculations for residences and small commercial buildings will be taught. Code requirements and installation methods for various types of cables, conduits (both flexible and non-flexible), and service equipment will be addressed. An introduction to the National Electrical Code, as applied to residential and light commercial wiring is part of the program; therefore, strong math and language skills are recommended. The safe use of tools and industry work practices will be stressed. Cooperative Education opportunities and transition assistance into apprenticeship training and work placement are integral to this program. Upon successful completion of this two-year program and an end of program assessment, students will receive advanced placement in the OCVTS Adult Education Division Apprenticeship Program.
