FOR THE APPLICANT
The Academy of Law & Public Safety (ALPS) is designed to provide a unique and comprehensive foundation of knowledge, skills and professional ethics for Ocean County students interested in pursuing a career in public safety. The academy offers a rigorous educational program while integrating the latest technology related to criminal justice. Students have the opportunity to earn over 24 college credits through our Ocean County College embedded, dual-enrollment courses. Graduates can earn credentials to include Emergency Medical Dispatch, Basic Telecommunicator, CPR and Special Law Enforcement Officer Class I Certification.
ALPS graduates have been hired and/or are currently employed with over 30 New Jersey Police Departments, as well as NJ Departments of Correction, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, and the NJ Administrative Office of the Courts.
STUDENT SELECTION AND ADMISSION
Students are selected through a competitive application process and enter at the ninth grade level. Applicants must reside in Ocean County to be eligible for admission. All school districts in Ocean County are eligible to participate in sending applications to the program.
ADMISSION
Applicants will be ranked using the following criteria: academic grades, attendance, and entrance exam score.
TRANSPORTATION
The student’s resident district will be responsible for transporting the student to MATES.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The school day runs from 7:30AM until 1:43PM. Classes are offered in a block time similar to a typical college program. Each semester students receive a different schedule.
