Cosmetology

COSMETOLOGY

The Cosmetology Program provides instruction in the skills required to take the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology licensing exam. The skills taught relate to the major areas of instruction including hair, skin, nail services and barbering, as well as business management and ownership. Curriculum content will cover: sterilization and sanitation procedures; techniques to cut, shape, set, style, color and highlight hair, permanent wave and chemical relaxing techniques, temporary hair removal, waxing, shaving for men, makeup application, facials, manicures, pedicures, nail enhancements, salon receptionist functions, maintenance of individual client records, care and styling of wigs, thermal pressing and curling. Students also participate in clinical experiences on site, which provide hands on training in Cosmetology services. Consistent attendance is crucial for completion of the 1000-hour requirement, as dictated by the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology. Please be aware that in order to sit for the state licensing exam all students must have a valid social security number or tax number ID number, a valid government issued photo ID and a secondary proof of identification (does not need to be a photo ID), and a high school diploma; a home educated diploma will not be recognized for licensure. Home-educated students must obtain their High School Equivalency Diploma to apply for their New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology license.

The Below Options (2 & 3) are for Adult Students. Prerequisite: High School Diploma

10 Month Accelerated Cosmetology Program |
Monday-Friday 2:00PM-7:00PM 10 Month (1000hrs)

Culinary Arts

CULINARY ARTS

The Culinary Arts program provides students with experience in the preparation, service and management tasks involved in the food service industry with classroom instruction and hands-on training in a commercial kitchen. Areas of concentration during year one include the following: Dining Room Service, covering professional service skills; banquet service; beverage and mixology, including barista skills. Culinary Arts I focuses on basic cooking methods, safety and sanitation (including ServSafe), knife skills, stocks, soups, sauces, salads and sandwiches. Fundamentals of Baking involves identification and function of the most common baking ingredients, quick bread production methods, yeast raised doughs, cookies pies and tart production. Bakeshop weights and measures, metric measurements and mixing methods. Areas of concentration during year two include: Culinary Arts II - basic meat cutting, smoking, and advanced cooking methodology such as sous vide cookery and molecular gastronomy. Advanced Baking and Pastry Arts focuses on artisan breads, cake decorating buttercream, fondant, and gum paste flowers. European pastry, tarts, tortes entremets, verrines and artisan chocolates.

Articulation agreements with The Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College, The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College, Culinary Institute of America, and Brookdale Community College have been established to provide students with an opportunity to earn advanced college credit upon successful completion of this program. Students also have the opportunity of earning a scholarship toward tuition cost through the Johnson & Wales University, FAST agreement.

Human Development & Childcare

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT & CHILDCARE

This program provides training for teacher assistant positions in child care centers. Students gain experience supervising and guiding preschoolers, ages 3-5, in a developmentally appropriate nursery school setting within the classroom. Students develop skills in: performing health, safety and sanitation activities; assisting with planning and guiding curriculum experiences in art, creative movement, language arts, math, music, nutrition, pre-reading/pre-writing, and science; supervising daily routines, transitions and meals; creating instructional games and visual aids. In addition, Job Shadowing/Mentoring is offered in community child care centers. Students can earn instructional hours towards the Child Development Associate (CDA), a nationally recognized credential, equivalent to group teacher certification. Graduates may continue their education in the early childhood field through college courses leading to New Jersey teacher certification.
