Fifty-eight Practical Nursing students at OCVTS recently received the traditional nurse’s cap at a ceremony recognizing the achievements and accomplishments in completing the first half of the intense and comprehensive nursing program. PROGRAM AREA \ COURSE OF STUDY APRIL 2, 2025 58 OCVTS NURSING STUDENTS RECOGNIZED AT TRADITIONAL CAPPING CEREMONY 58 OCVTS NURSING STUDENTS RECOGNIZED AT TRADITIONAL CAPPING CEREMONY Nicholas Spiech, OCVTS APRIL 2, 2025 Toms River, NJ – In a pivotal moment that marks the culmination of the first phase of rigorous training, fifty-eight aspiring nurses at Ocean County Vocational Technical School (OCVTS) were honored with the traditional nurse’s cap in a ceremony on March 31, 2025. This ceremonial recognition not only underscores their successful completion of numerous hours of classroom instruction and skills testing but also heralds the commencement of their specialty rotations in local healthcare facilities. Practical nurses, integral to the healthcare team, are adept at providing care to patients across a spectrum of needs under the guidance of registered nurses and licensed physicians. The journey of the OCVTS nursing students continues as they gain valuable hands-on experience in the cutting-edge nursing skills laboratory at the OCVTS Toms River Center. This facility, a beneficiary of the Hirair and Anna Hovnanian Foundation's magnanimity, is outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment and technology, including an advanced manikin capable of simulating various childbirth scenarios. This immersive learning environment is emblematic of OCVTS’s commitment to a practical, reality-based educational approach. Further enhancing their educational experience, OCVTS has forged valuable partnerships with more than a dozen local hospitals and healthcare facilities. These alliances not only facilitate invaluable practical experience for the students but also allow them to seamlessly integrate theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom with real-world applications. Looking ahead, the graduation ceremony slated for the end of June 2025 will mark the transition of these students to the next pivotal stage of their careers. Upon graduation, they will be eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN, thereby taking their next step toward becoming Licensed Practical Nurses in New Jersey. It is noteworthy that the pass rates of OCVTS nursing graduates have consistently exceeded both state and national averages, underscoring the program’s excellence. The Practical Nursing Program at OCVTS, established in 1959 as the institution’s inaugural offering, is sanctioned by the New Jersey Board of Nursing and the Department of Education. Not only is it the largest vocational technical-based nursing program in New Jersey, but it also maintains a highly competitive admission process due to its limited class sizes and rigorous curriculum. Their focus, hard work, and dedication paid off, and after competing against eight other high school teams, they emerged victorious. PROGRAM AREA \ COURSE OF STUDY MARCH 9, 2022 MATES Win 2022 Ocean County Mock Trial MATES Win 2022 Ocean County Mock Trial Jennifer Hudak, Mates Instructor MARCH 9, 2022 OCEAN COUNTY, NEW JERSEY - The members of the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES) Mock Trial team had ONE goal this year…to win the Ocean County Championship! Their focus, hard work, and dedication paid off, and after competing against eight other high school teams, they emerged victorious!! The team has competed for fourteen years in the Vincent J. Apruzzese Mock Trial Competition sponsored by the NJ State Bar Foundation. This year’s case involved a criminal lawsuit: The defendant, a 20-year-old computer whiz, is accused of conspiracy to receive and sell stolen goods from vendors on the dark web, using cryptocurrency to avoid detection. Students, led by Mock Trial coach MATES Instructor Jennifer Hudak, take on the roles of attorneys and witnesses and must present the most compelling litigation to advance through rounds of competition. As a result of this year’s virtual platform, it was also necessary to have student alternates and a timekeeper. In total, the team advanced through five rounds of the competition to reach the Regional Semifinals. MATES students who participated are: defense attorneys, Michael Hudak and Devin Rauscher; prosecuting attorneys Todd Ferry and Kristen Weppler; defense witnesses Alanna Costello, Katherine Elmer, and Rokas Stancauskas; prosecution witnesses Meahan Azmi, Estelle Balsirow, and Bryce Davenport; alternates Aidan Danza, Kyle Cousens, Jon Beck, Brianna Tonner, Maggie Kelleher, Thomas Hagan, Angelo Amato, and Seamus Watson; and time keeper Kathryn Conway. Another aspect of the competition is the Courtroom Sketch Artist Competition. MATES has had student artists participate for the past seven years; this year’s artists were: Michelle Kagramian, Jennifer Kim, and Mariana Kaiafas. In total, the student artists submitted over twelve sketches that will be critiqued by professional courtroom artists and earn recognition ranging from Honorable Mention to First Place in the state. The team is extremely proud of its accomplishment and is currently working with the MATES PTSO and Shelter Cove Embroidery to design Ocean County Championship jackets. Coach Hudak would like to thank the students, staff, and administration for all their support over the years. A special thank you goes out to Attorney Coaches Bill and Dave Wright who work with the student attorneys and witnesses to perfect their courtroom skills. This truly has been a team effort! Fifty-four Practical Nursing students at OCVTS recently received the traditional nurse’s cap at a ceremony recognizing the achievements and accomplishments in completing the first half of the intense and comprehensive nursing program. PROGRAM AREA \ COURSE OF STUDY MARCH 29, 2022 OCVTS NURSING STUDENTS RECOGNIZED AT TRADITIONAL CAPPING CEREMONY OCVTS NURSING STUDENTS RECOGNIZED AT TRADITIONAL CAPPING CEREMONY OCVTS Practical Nursing MARCH 29, 2022 Fifty-four Practical Nursing students at Ocean County Vocational Technical School (OCVTS) recently received the traditional nurse’s cap at a ceremony recognizing the achievements and accomplishments in completing the first half of the intense and comprehensive nursing program. The students have successfully completed many hours of classroom and skills testing. They will now continue on to specialty rotations at local health facilities. A practical nurse is trained to care for acute, sub-acute, convalescent and chronically ill patients under the direction of a registered nurse and/or licensed physician. The OCVTS nursing students continue to gain valuable experience in the state-of-the-art nursing skills lab, funded through a generous donation from the Hirair and Anna Hovnanian Foundation. The lab, located at the OCVTS Toms River Center, equipped with the latest equipment and technology provides a reality-based approach to learning, including a life-like manikin which can be programmed to simulate a myriad of childbirth scenarios. Additionally, OCVTS has established agreements with over a dozen local hospitals and health care facilities which provide valuable opportunities for students to gain experience and apply classroom theory. Graduation is scheduled for the end of June. At that time students will be prepared to take the NCLEX-PN for qualification as a Licensed Practical Nurse in New Jersey. Historically, OCVTS nursing graduates’ pass rate for the NCLEX-PN has surpassed both the state and national average pass rate. The OCVTS Practical Nursing Program was the first program offered at OCVTS and began in 1959. It is approved by the New Jersey Board of Nursing and the Department of Education.
