One Hundred Twenty Ocean County Vocational Technical School (OCVTS) students competed at the New Jersey SkillsUSA Championships which took place on Saturdays in March and April in several counties, throughout New Jersey. In addition to the Vocational Schools’ sites, the N.E. Carpenters Apprentice Training Center, Edison and the Mercedes Benz Training Center, Robbinsville, New Jersey also hosted various SkillsUSA competitions. SkillsUSA is a national organization which provides quality educational experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development. The students competed in over 46 different career-skills events against other high school and post-secondary students from all regions of New Jersey. The Awards Ceremony was held Saturday, April 1, 2023 where winners were announced for all events; whether Saturday’s competitions or contests held earlier in 2023. OCVTS students received an astounding 41 medals overall; 15 gold, 18 silver and 9 bronze. Many of the gold medal winners are now eligible to advance to the 59th Annual SkillsUSA National Competition/Conference which will be held in Atlanta, Georgia at the end of June. As per the official website, skillsusa.org, the Conference is a showcase of career and technical education students. More than 12,000 people – including students, teachers and business partners – are expected to participate in the weeklong event. In addition to the actual competitions, students participate in individual, group and interactive leadership training activities. More than 6,500 career and technical education students, all state contest winners, will compete hands-on in 108 different trade, technical and leadership fields. The week’s events culminate with the Awards Ceremony, where many of the nation’s top finishers will receive scholarships, tools, computers or other prizes related to their career fields in additional to their medals and national recognition. Students and staff at the OCVTS Brick Center partnered again this year with Fulfill, formerly known as the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean County, and RWJ Barnabas Community Medical Center to prepare meals for those in need this Thanksgiving. Over 3,500 meals will be distributed. PROGRAM AREA \ COURSE OF STUDY NOV 26, 2024 Culinary Arts at OCVTS Turns Passion into Service with 3,500 Thanksgiving Meals for Local Families in Need Culinary Arts at OCVTS Turns Passion into Service with 3,500 Thanksgiving Meals for Local Families in Need Nicholas Spiech NOV 26, 2024 BRICK, NJ- Culinary Arts students and staff at the Ocean County Vocational Technical School’s Brick Center partnered again this year with Fulfill, formerly known as the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean County, and RWJ Barnabas Community Medical Center to prepare meals for those in need this Thanksgiving. Over 3,500 meals will be distributed through various local social service agencies such as Preferred Behavioral Health, Department of Children Protection and Permanency (DCCP), Inspire NJ, and numerous local churches and school districts. Culinary Arts students from the Brick Center, under the direction of their instructors, prepare and roast over 450 turkeys, as well as preparing traditional side dishes including: mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, stuffing, and gravy. In addition, several OCVTS Culinary Arts graduates will return to the Brick Center to lend a helping hand with this much needed community service. Many of these graduates who are currently employed in the culinary field take time off from their work schedule in order to volunteer to be part of this extraordinary project. Massive assembly lines of students package the meals and prepare them to be distributed over several days and it is truly impressive to witness. Fundraising efforts through the OCVTS Foundation, combined with the generosity of Fulfill NJ, RWJ Barnabas Health, and financial contributions from the public fund this annual community service project which began over 25 years ago. Fulfill provides all of the turkeys, RWJ Barnabas Community Medical Center provides all of the additional food items needed to prepare the meals, and the Ocean County Foundation for Vocational Technical Education provides the packaging and containers needed for distributing these meals. Supervisory employees shall immediately report all alleged violations of the State Policy Prohibiting Discrimination in the Workplace to the district’s Affirmative Action Officer Dr. Michael B. Maschi, (Assistant Superintendent). Such a report shall include both alleged violations reported to the supervisor, and those alleged violations directly observed by the supervisor. Every effort should be made to report complaints promptly. Delays in reporting may not only hinder a proper investigation, but may also unnecessarily subject the victim to continued prohibited conduct. The Ocean County Vocational Technical School District shall maintain a written record of the discrimination/harassment complaint received. Investigation Process: During the initial intake of a complaint, the AA Officer will obtain information regarding the complaint and determine if interim corrective measures are necessary to prevent continued violations of the State’s Policy Prohibiting Discrimination in the Workplace.. At the AA Officers’ discretion, (when necessary) a prompt, thorough, and impartial investigation into the alleged harassment or discrimination will take place. All investigations of discrimination/harassment claims shall be conducted in a way that respects, to the extent possible, the privacy of all the persons involved. Any person thought to have information relevant to the complaint shall be interviewed and such interviews shall be appropriately documented. Other acceptable methods for gathering information include but are not limited to visual inspection of relevant materials and follow-up interviews, as necessary. An investigatory report will be prepared by the AA Officer(s). The report will include: (a) a summary of the complaint; (b) a summary of the parties positions; (c) a summary of the facts developed through the investigation and (d) an analysis of the allegations and the facts. The investigatory report will be submitted to the Superintendent of Schools. Complaint Resolution: The Superintendent of Schools will review the investigatory report issued by the AA Officer(s) and make a determination as to whether the allegation of a violation of the State’s Policy Prohibiting Discrimination in the Workplace has been substantiated. If a violation has occurred, the Office of Affirmative Action, on behalf of the Superintendent of Schools, will determine the appropriate corrective measures necessary to immediately remedy the violation, including the imposition of discipline, if warranted. The Office of Affirmative Action, on behalf of the Superintendent of Schools will issue a final letter of determination to the parties. The final letter of determination will set forth the results of the investigation and the right of appeal to the Civil Service Commission (CSC). To the extent possible, the privacy of all parties involved in the process shall be maintained in the final letter of determination. The Division of EEO/AA shall be furnished with a copy of the final letter of determination. Timeline: The investigation of a complaint shall be completed and a final letter of determination shall be issued no later than 120 days after the initial intake of the complaint is completed. The time for completion of the investigation and issuance of the final letter of determination may be extended by the Superintendent of Schools for up to 60 additional days in cases involving exceptional circumstances. In the event of such extension, the Superintendent shall provide the Division of EEO/AA and all parties with written notice of any extension and shall include in the notice an explanation of the exceptional circumstances supporting the extension. Appeals Process: A complainant who is in the career or unclassified service, or who is an applicant for employment, who disagrees with the determination of the Office of Affirmative Action, may submit a written appeal, within twenty days of the receipt of the final letter of determination from the Office of Affirmative Action, to the Civil Service Commission, PO Box 312, Trenton, NJ 08625. The appeal shall be in writing and include all materials presented by the complainant at the University, the final letter of determination, the reason for the appeal and the specific relief requested. See N.J.A.C. 4A:2-1.1 et seq. External Agencies: Any employee or applicant for employment can file a complaint directly with external agencies such as the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that investigate discrimination/harassment charges in addition to utilizing this internal procedure. Copies of complaints filed with the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, or in court also must be submitted to the Division of EEO/AA. The event was a spectacular celebration of teamwork, unity, and friendly competition, bringing together staff members from various departments/buildings for a day of fun-filled activities and challenges. The day kicked off with an air of excitement as staff members geared up for over 14 thrilling team-building events organized with meticulous planning. Divided into six teams, the participants eagerly embraced the challenges that awaited them. The day's activities were not just about competition; they were about fostering bonds with peers, supporting each other as spectators, and simply having a blast together. Staff members had the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities, ranging from a high-energy fitness dance class to the tranquility of yoga. For those feeling artistic, a step-by-step painting session allowed creativity to flow freely. Fitness enthusiasts laced up their shoes for a 1-mile walk/run, while others showcased their skills in classic games like kickball, cornhole, and volleyball. The atmosphere was charged with excitement during games of Family Feud, Name That Tune, and the hilarious Hungry, Hungry Hippo. The day also featured classic relay games like Golf Ball on a Spoon, Bean Bag Toss, Sponge Bucket, and Beach Ball Hop, which brought out the inner child in everyone. Spectators added to the vibrant ambiance, lounging on lawn chairs, sporting sunglasses, and cheering passionately for their favorite teams. The sense of community was palpable, creating an environment where everyone felt a sense of belonging and shared purpose. The day was not just about competition; it was also an opportunity for staff members to unwind, share a laugh, and relish a sense of achievement. The event was a spectacular celebration of teamwork, unity, and friendly competition, bringing together staff members from various departments/buildings for a day of fun-filled activities and challenges. The day kicked off with an air of excitement as staff members geared up for over 14 thrilling team-building events organized with meticulous planning. Divided into six teams, the participants eagerly embraced the challenges that awaited them. The day's activities were not just about competition; they were about fostering bonds with peers, supporting each other as spectators, and simply having a blast together. Staff members had the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities, ranging from a high-energy fitness dance class to the tranquility of yoga. For those feeling artistic, a step-by-step painting session allowed creativity to flow freely. Fitness enthusiasts laced up their shoes for a 1-mile walk/run, while others showcased their skills in classic games like kickball, cornhole, and volleyball. The atmosphere was charged with excitement during games of Family Feud, Name That Tune, and the hilarious Hungry, Hungry Hippo. The day also featured classic relay games like Golf Ball on a Spoon, Bean Bag Toss, Sponge Bucket, and Beach Ball Hop, which brought out the inner child in everyone. Spectators added to the vibrant ambiance, lounging on lawn chairs, sporting sunglasses, and cheering passionately for their favorite teams.
