Fifty-eight Practical Nursing students at OCVTS recently received the traditional nurse’s cap at a ceremony recognizing the achievements and accomplishments in completing the first half of the intense and comprehensive nursing program. PROGRAM AREA \ COURSE OF STUDY APRIL 2, 2025 58 OCVTS NURSING STUDENTS RECOGNIZED AT TRADITIONAL CAPPING CEREMONY 58 OCVTS NURSING STUDENTS RECOGNIZED AT TRADITIONAL CAPPING CEREMONY Nicholas Spiech, OCVTS APRIL 2, 2025 Toms River, NJ – In a pivotal moment that marks the culmination of the first phase of rigorous training, fifty-eight aspiring nurses at Ocean County Vocational Technical School (OCVTS) were honored with the traditional nurse’s cap in a ceremony on March 31, 2025. This ceremonial recognition not only underscores their successful completion of numerous hours of classroom instruction and skills testing but also heralds the commencement of their specialty rotations in local healthcare facilities. Practical nurses, integral to the healthcare team, are adept at providing care to patients across a spectrum of needs under the guidance of registered nurses and licensed physicians. The journey of the OCVTS nursing students continues as they gain valuable hands-on experience in the cutting-edge nursing skills laboratory at the OCVTS Toms River Center. This facility, a beneficiary of the Hirair and Anna Hovnanian Foundation's magnanimity, is outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment and technology, including an advanced manikin capable of simulating various childbirth scenarios. This immersive learning environment is emblematic of OCVTS’s commitment to a practical, reality-based educational approach. Further enhancing their educational experience, OCVTS has forged valuable partnerships with more than a dozen local hospitals and healthcare facilities. These alliances not only facilitate invaluable practical experience for the students but also allow them to seamlessly integrate theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom with real-world applications. Looking ahead, the graduation ceremony slated for the end of June 2025 will mark the transition of these students to the next pivotal stage of their careers. Upon graduation, they will be eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN, thereby taking their next step toward becoming Licensed Practical Nurses in New Jersey. It is noteworthy that the pass rates of OCVTS nursing graduates have consistently exceeded both state and national averages, underscoring the program’s excellence. The Practical Nursing Program at OCVTS, established in 1959 as the institution’s inaugural offering, is sanctioned by the New Jersey Board of Nursing and the Department of Education. Not only is it the largest vocational technical-based nursing program in New Jersey, but it also maintains a highly competitive admission process due to its limited class sizes and rigorous curriculum. • OCVTS Holds Graduation for 57 Practical Nursing Students

Fifty-seven graduates persevered through the extremely challenging curriculum and demanding schedules and successfully completed the Practical Nursing program. In addition to receiving diplomas, the graduates were welcomed to their new profession with the traditional pinning ceremony. PROGRAM AREA \ COURSE OF STUDY JUNE 27, 2025 OCVTS Holds Graduation for 57 Practical Nursing Students OCVTS Holds Graduation for 57 Practical Nursing Students Nicholas Spiech, OCVTS JUNE 27, 2025 Toms River, NJ, June 27, 2025 – OCVTS held its 102nd commencement ceremony for the graduates of the Practical Nursing program. Families and friends gathered to recognize the 57 graduates who persevered through the extremely challenging curriculum and demanding schedules and successfully completed the program. In addition to receiving diplomas, the graduates were welcomed to their new profession with the traditional pinning ceremony. The graduates receive a symbolic pin from a member of the faculty or by a family member who is also a nursing professional. This year, 17 of the 57 graduates were pinned by family members; 5 of those 17 family members were past graduates of the OCVTS Practical Nursing Program. Several 2025 graduates received scholarships and recognition for outstanding achievements. The Ocean County Foundation for Vocational Technical Education presented Awards of Academic Excellence/Outstanding Student Awards to Stephanie Lepore for maintaining the highest-grade point average; Kimberly Vashey for maintaining the second highest average, and Kelly McKenna for maintaining the third highest grade point average throughout the program. OCVTS has forged valuable partnerships with more than a dozen local hospitals and healthcare facilities, facilitating invaluable practical experience for students and allowing them to seamlessly integrate theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom with real-world applications. Over half of the required hours of the Practical Nursing Program involves clinical rotations at these facilities, providing students with opportunities to gain experience and apply classroom theory. Notably, Renée and Jennifer Matuska received the Bernadette DeFrancisci Scholarship Award for excelling in their clinical work environments, exhibiting flexibility as role models and mentors, and maintaining a positive and caring attitude. This scholarship, named in honor of retired OCVTS instructor Bernadette DeFrancisci, was provided by Cordella Lyon, MAEM, BS, RN, and Dr. Ann McGowan, alumni of the OCVTS program, in honor of Mrs. "D". Additionally, two students received an award for perfect attendance despite illness, bad weather, and hectic personal and academic schedules. Angie Mena and Michael Seaman never missed a day of school, both in class and the clinical areas. At this time students are prepared to take the National Council Licensure Examination for qualification as a Licensed Practical Nurse (NCLEX-PN). The Ocean County Vocational Technical School (OCVTS) proudly held commencement ceremonies for their three full-time High School Career Academies on Monday, July 6th. Students studying fields ranging from math and science to the performing arts and law enforcement were honored and received certifications at the event. The 2020 academic year posed a unique challenge to students, as the COVID-19 crisis forced OCVTS’ students and instructors to move towards remote learning in mid-March. Students studying fields ranging from math and science to the performing arts and law enforcement were honored and received certifications at the event. The 2020 academic year posed a unique challenge to students, as the COVID-19 crisis forced OCVTS’ students and instructors to move towards remote learning in mid-March. Much in the spirit of OCVTS the students and staff faced the challenge head-on, finishing the academic year and obtaining their certifications remotely. Superintendent Karen L. Homiek of the Ocean County Vocational Technical School District certified the graduating classes of the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science, OCVTS Grunin Performing Arts Academy, and Academy of Law and Public Safety. In Superintendent Homiek’s address to the students she recognized that the graduates were deprived of key milestones and faced unprecedented challenges. She added, “It has been a very long journey to get here but I do believe that the journey was well worth the effort. Despite the pandemic that continues to complicate all of our lives, you, with the help of your teachers and administrators, finished the year with as much learning, collaboration, communication and celebration possible.” Attendees of the ceremonies included, Joseph Vicari, Freeholder Director, Stephen Scaturro, Vice President of the OCVTS Board of Education, Maureen Stankowitz, OCVTS Board member, Dr. Michael B. Maschi, Assistant Superintendent, and Frank J. Frazee, Business Administrator. The Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES) is a specialized high school centered around marine and environmental science. With a focus on math and science MATES students complete an independent research project as well as hands-on field work on the Barnegat Bay. The OCVTS Grunin Performing Arts Academy (PAA) is a comprehensive high school for students in Ocean County featuring four distinct majors: Audio Engineering, Dance, Theater, and Vocal. Traditionally, PAA students hold showcase performances in the fall, spring, and winter. In February 2020 PAA students showcased their talents in the musical Legally Blonde, held at the historic Strand Theater in Lakewood, NJ. The Academy of Law and Public Safety (ALPS) offers a unique and comprehensive foundation for students interested in a career in public safety. Our 2020 graduates successfully completed their Special Law Enforcement Officer training, Basic Telecommunications training and Emergency Medical Responder training. Many of this year’s graduates will be working this summer in Ocean County’s local beach communities as dispatchers and special ones within local departments. About Ocean County Vocational Technical School Ocean County Vocational Technical School provides an intensive and immersive educational experience aligned with the current and emerging demands of business, industry, and advanced education.
