The venue provided ample space for the event, including an area for the Excavator Rodeo—a competition featuring seven top heavy equipment operators from the region. Renewable energies and commercial wiring are touched upon. The fundamental theory and application of alternating and direct current circuits, test equipment, transformers, motors, and various types of control devices for power, and lighting are emphasized. Load calculations for residences and small commercial buildings will be taught. Code requirements and installation methods for various types of cables, conduits (both flexible and non-flexible), and service equipment will be addressed. An introduction to the National Electrical Code, as applied to residential and light commercial wiring is part of the program; therefore, strong math and language skills are recommended. The safe use of tools and industry work practices will be stressed. Cooperative Education opportunities and transition assistance into apprenticeship training and work placement are integral to this program. Students will learn the skills necessary to be able to service, repair and install these systems, making them marketable and career ready in the mechanical trades. This course will include industry safety standards, electrical schematic diagrams, control wiring, system troubleshooting and basic piping concepts meeting industry standards. YEAR 2 HVAC/Refrigeration (450 hrs) Students will learn basic concepts necessary to install, repair and maintain heating air conditioning on both residential and commercial refrigeration equipment. Building code, basic theory and operation of mechanical components, along with electrical controls will also be covered. The Environmental Protection Agency Refrigerant Certification exam will be given upon course completion of the program. We are pleased to share their stories as they reflect on their time at UArizona. PROGRAM AREA \ COURSE OF STUDY APRIL 20, 2022 MATES Class of 2018 Graduate Nominated as Outstand Senior by University of Arizona College of Science MATES Class of 2018 Graduate Nominated as Outstand Senior by University of Arizona College of Science Scott Coleman and Adam Gonzales, College of Science APRIL 20, 2022 This spring (2022), each department in the University of Arizona's College of Science nominated an outstanding senior who went above and beyond during their time as a Wildcat. We are pleased to share their stories as they reflect on their time at UArizona. Next up in the senior spotlight series is Brianna Hoegler. Brianna Hoegler Hometown: Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey Degree: Bachelor of Science in Geosciences (emphasis in Earth, Oceans, and Climate), Minors in History and Marine Science College of Science: College of Science: Why did you choose your area of study? Brianna: I've known that I wanted to work in science for a long time, and I grew up in an ecologically and climatically vulnerable area along the bay in New Jersey, so I've had an interest in protecting the environment since I was a young kid. I attended a science-focused public magnet school for high school, and there I was able to take many different science classes while conducting independent research. There, I found my love for soils, sediments, oceanography, and geology, and I knew that I wanted to major in geosciences in college. COS: Tell us about a class or research project you really enjoyed Brianna: I've been working in Dr. Diane Thompson's Tropical Climate and Coral Reefs Lab since my sophomore year. There, I use nitrogen isotopes deposited in lake sediments through flamingo guano to learn more about the paleo-productivity of the eastern tropical Pacific. My lab work has led me to become a more confident scientist and scholar, and I have been given the opportunity to present my work at a variety of conferences, including the AGU Fall Meeting in New Orleans this past December. Most importantly, though, Dr. Thompson has been an invaluable mentor and advisor over the past three years that I have worked with her. COS: What is one specific memory from your time at UA that you'll cherish forever? Brianna: There are so many moments that are special to me from my time at the University of Arizona. Some of the most special moments were the times I got to spend just hanging out with the amazing friends I made here, whether we were grabbing Sunday brunch, hiking in the mountains, or just chatting outside on the Mall. COS:What is next for you after graduation? Brianna: I'm planning on going to graduate school in the fall. I will be attending Brown University to pursue a PhD in Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Science. There, I will work with Dr. Tim Herbert to reconstruct past climates and changes in ocean currents using deep-sea sediment cores. We are pleased to share their stories as they reflect on their time at UArizona. Next up in the senior spotlight series is Brianna Hoegler. Brianna Hoegler Hometown: Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey Degree: Bachelor of Science in Geosciences (emphasis in Earth, Oceans, and Climate), Minors in History and Marine Science College of Science: College of Science: Why did you choose your area of study? Brianna: I've known that I wanted to work in science for a long time, and I grew up in an ecologically and climatically vulnerable area along the bay in New Jersey, so I've had an interest in protecting the environment since I was a young kid. I attended a science-focused public magnet school for high school, and there I was able to take many different science classes while conducting independent research. There, I found my love for soils, sediments, oceanography, and geology, and I knew that I wanted to major in geosciences in college. COS: Tell us about a class or research project you really enjoyed Brianna: I've been working in Dr. Diane Thompson's Tropical Climate and Coral Reefs Lab since my sophomore year. There, I use nitrogen isotopes deposited in lake sediments through flamingo guano to learn more about the paleo-productivity of the eastern tropical Pacific. My lab work has led me to become a more confident scientist and scholar, and I have been given the opportunity to present my work at a variety of conferences, including the AGU Fall Meeting in New Orleans this past December. Most importantly, though, Dr. Thompson has been an invaluable mentor and advisor over the past three years that I have worked with her. COS: What is one specific memory from your time at UA that you'll cherish forever? Brianna: There are so many moments that are special to me from my time at the University of Arizona. Some of the most special moments were the times I got to spend just hanging out with the amazing friends I made here, whether we were grabbing Sunday brunch, hiking in the mountains, or just chatting outside on the Mall. COS:What is next for you after graduation? Brianna: I'm planning on going to graduate school in the fall. I will be attending Brown University to pursue a PhD in Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Science. There, I will work with Dr. Tim Herbert to reconstruct past climates and changes in ocean currents using deep-sea sediment cores. Avenir Light is a clean and stylish font favored by designers. Congratulations to Daniel Hippie, Trish DeAnni, Gabriella Grant, Jay Houle, Jennifer Hudak & John Fogerty on their achievements. Daniel C. Hippe - OCVTS Academy of Law & Public Safety ~ When I was looking to start a second career, I considered several options, but continued to be drawn to teaching. I always loved training, coaching and mentoring others, and I could not think of a more rewarding way to spend the next chapter of my life. I am blessed to have found a home at my current school where the students truly make our building the special place that it is. They are motivated, polite, respectful and appreciative of what we do for them. Because of them, I look forward to going to work each day more than any other time in my 30+ year career. Despite the long hours and personal sacrifices, seeing the success of my students and helping them along their journeys makes this the most fulfilling position I have ever held. I would like to thank my family for their support, my co-workers for their continued assistance, and my district administrators for the opportunity to do this job every day. Trish DeAnni - OCVTS Brick Center ~ I am honored to have been chosen as our school’s teacher of the year as I work with some of the best teachers who instill creativity daily. I began my career as an elementary special education teacher in 1993. I have been teaching high school students at OCVTS since 1999 and I have held different teaching positions within the special education department. For several years, I taught math to special needs students in their prospective trades. I encourage my students to persevere and watch their amazement when they understand a difficult lesson. I now teach Career Dynamics which is a transition program for special needs young adults. I love coming to school and seeing my students grow and improve their skills. There are countless learning opportunities to give my students each day as they work. My goal is to help my students become productive citizens and independent adults. Gabriella Grant - OCVTS Grunin Performing Arts Academy ~ It is very humbling to be selected as Teacher of the Year among all the incredible staff at the Grunin Performing Arts Academy. I started my career in education because I wanted to positively influence young people, which has proved tremendously fulfilling. This is largely due to a student’s capacity for growth and creativity, as well as a lack of limits and sense of adventure. My students inspire me far more than I ever will them. Their eager approach to new experiences is useful in changing my mind, and as I get older, I’m finding these necessary adjustments to be more difficult. Thankfully, my career allows for regular reflections on my own identity. It is with gratitude that I look back on the many mentors responsible for fostering my teaching skills in the classroom. I am supported daily by the significant efforts of the administration and staff at GPAA, and I look forward to each day to teach my unbelievably talented students. Jay B. Houle—OCVTS Jackson Center ~ It is a great honor that the Jackson Center has chosen me to be the Teacher of the year. My career starter in the Marine Corps, I learned a lot about managing and instructing fellow marines. I spent years working in the automotive field honing my skills, and decided it was time to pass the knowledge I gained and pursue teaching. In 2011 I started teaching Automotive Technology and again learned a lot, and realized this is what I was meant to do. In 2019 I came to the Jackson center to teach Automotive Servicing and to help students reach their goals of becoming a mechanic. Over the years I have seen many students be successful from what I taught them and makes this job worthwhile. I strive each and every day to turn out the best entry level mechanic and help the students to reach their dream. Jennifer Hudak - Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science ~ I have a sign on the wall in room 226B that reads: “My happy place is this classroom.” Although I purchased the small, wooden plaque a few years ago, its sentiment has rung true for most of my life. Whether sitting on a colorful rug reciting the days of the week at five years old or standing in front of a group of students while teaching the importance of the Oxford comma, I have always belonged in a classroom. My goal as an educator is for my students to enter my classroom and feel the same happiness and excitement that I do about making connections and sharing content. Every day, I am thankful that I work in a school where education is revered and students want to learn. I am blessed to have a family who understands and supports my passion for teaching, even when it means that I stay at school a few hours longer than I should. Teaching is not what I do; it’s who I am. John Fogerty - OCVTS Toms River Center ~ It is an honor to have been chosen as Teacher of the Year for Ocean County Vocational Technical School’s Toms River Center. I took the long way to finding the career that I was meant to be in. I spent years working in business and, while I was relatively successful, I sometimes felt like I was living someone else’s dream. So, I continued taking college classes while working full-time. I graduated from Stockton University in 2012 at 30 years old. However, it wasn’t until 2015 that I decided to finally pursue my dream of teaching. After a few substitute teaching jobs, I found myself at Ocean County Vocational Technical School. I never expected to be an English teacher at a vocational school, but once I started here in 2016, I quickly realized what a wonderful and unique opportunity it was. On a daily basis, I get to see students pursuing a passion they’ve found at such a young age. I’m thrilled to be here as a resource, assisting them on their journey to the career that they feel they are meant to be in. The Pit Stop Challenge Finale, hosted by Lester Glenn Auto Group, showcased the skills of OCVTS Automotive students and highlighted the educational benefits of their partnership, emphasizing hands-on training and industry preparation. The competition began within each service center in late 2023, where M-Level technicians demonstrated their expertise in a series of friendly but challenging competitions, judged by their senior technicians. The winners from these initial rounds progressed to the finale, a competitive event designed to test their speed, skills, and accuracy. Ocean County Vocational Technical School (OCVTS) had the privilege of having three of its alumni participate in this finale, with our Automotive Technology program instructors and administrators serving as judges. This participation underscores the effective, real-world training provided by OCVTS and highlights the value of our partnership with Lester Glenn Auto Group. Currently, Lester Glenn Auto Group is actively involved in nurturing our students' potential by hosting three OCVTS Automotive Cooperative Education (CE) students across their Chrysler, Jeep, Subaru, and GMC dealerships. These placements offer hands-on experience, crucial for mastering the complexities of the automotive industry. Moreover, a first-year student has secured herself a position at Lester Glenn Hyundai, working diligently after school hours and on weekends. The CE program facilitates a smooth transition from school to work, offering practical experience that significantly enhances classroom learning. Jackson Center Principal and District Automotive Department Supervisor John Biscardi, a panel judge, expressed his enthusiasm for the program's transformative impact on student development: "Seeing our students apply their learning in real-world scenarios with these companies reassures us that we are not just educating; we are empowering future innovators in automotive technology," Biscardi stated. The finale was a testament to the excellence and professionalism of all competitors, who represented themselves and their service centers admirably. Curriculum includes: extensive safety training, use of hand and power tools, blueprint reading, layout, industry-related mathematics, skills in framing, roofing, sheathing, siding, door and window installation, staircases, drywall installation, insulation, trim work, ceilings and floors. Complaint Resolution: The Superintendent of Schools will review the investigatory report issued by the AA Officer(s) and make a determination as to whether the allegation of a violation of the State’s Policy Prohibiting Discrimination in the Workplace has been substantiated. If a violation has occurred, the Office of Affirmative Action, on behalf of the Superintendent of Schools, will determine the appropriate corrective measures necessary to immediately remedy the violation, including the imposition of discipline, if warranted. The Office of Affirmative Action, on behalf of the Superintendent of Schools will issue a final letter of determination to the parties. The final letter of determination will set forth the results of the investigation and the right of appeal to the Civil Service Commission (CSC). To the extent possible, the privacy of all parties involved in the process shall be maintained in the final letter of determination. The Division of EEO/AA shall be furnished with a copy of the final letter of determination. Timeline: The investigation of a complaint shall be completed and a final letter of determination shall be issued no later than 120 days after the initial intake of the complaint is completed. The time for completion of the investigation and issuance of the final letter of determination may be extended by the Superintendent of Schools for up to 60 additional days in cases involving exceptional circumstances. In the event of such extension, the Superintendent shall provide the Division of EEO/AA and all parties with written notice of any extension and shall include in the notice an explanation of the exceptional circumstances supporting the extension. Appeals Process: A complainant who is in the career or unclassified service, or who is an applicant for employment, who disagrees with the determination of the Office of Affirmative Action, may submit a written appeal, within twenty days of the receipt of the final letter of determination from the Office of Affirmative Action, to the Civil Service Commission, PO Box 312, Trenton, NJ 08625. The appeal shall be in writing and include all materials presented by the complainant at the University, the final letter of determination, the reason for the appeal and the specific relief requested. See N.J.A.C. 4A:2-1.1 et seq. External Agencies: Any employee or applicant for employment can file a complaint directly with external agencies such as the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that investigate discrimination/harassment charges in addition to utilizing this internal procedure. Copies of complaints filed with the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, or in court also must be submitted to the Division of EEO/AA. AFFIRMATIVE ACTION GOALS The Ocean County Vocational Technical School District will continue to maintain a harassment-free environment for all students by training administrators, teachers, and students in understanding policies and in implementing programs dealing with harassment based on race, religion, ethnicity, and gender. The Ocean County Vocational Technical School District will continue to revise curriculum to ensure the elimination of discrimination, ensure multi-cultural content, and promote understanding and mutual respect among all students. The Ocean County Vocational Technical School District will continue to provide equal and bias-free access for all students to all school facilities, courses, programs, activities, and services regardless of race, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, religion, English proficiency, socio-economic status, or disability. The Ocean County Vocational Technical School District will continue to; (a) provide equitable treatment, adequate and appropriate counseling services for all students including females, minority students, limited English-proficient students, non-college bound students, and students with disabilities; (b) ensure exposure to non-traditional career options and post-secondary opportunities for minority and female students. The Ocean County Vocational Technical School District will continue to ensure gender equity in all physical education and athletic programs, and to continue to ensure equitable opportunities for all students to participate in athletics regardless of race, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, religion, English proficiency, socio-economic status, or disability. The Ocean County Vocational Technical School District will continue to ensure equitable practices in employment at all levels of responsibility, and to avoid engaging in business with firms that discriminate on the basis of race, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, religion, English proficiency, socio-economic status, or disability.
