Students studying fields ranging from math and science to the performing arts and law enforcement were honored and received certifications at the event. Students studying fields ranging from math and science to the performing arts and law enforcement were honored and received certifications at the event. The 2020 academic year posed a unique challenge to students, as the COVID-19 crisis forced OCVTS’ students and instructors to move towards remote learning in mid-March. Much in the spirit of OCVTS the students and staff faced the challenge head-on, finishing the academic year and obtaining their certifications remotely. Superintendent Karen L. Homiek of the Ocean County Vocational Technical School District certified the graduating classes of the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science, OCVTS Grunin Performing Arts Academy, and Academy of Law and Public Safety. In Superintendent Homiek’s address to the students she recognized that the graduates were deprived of key milestones and faced unprecedented challenges. She added, “It has been a very long journey to get here but I do believe that the journey was well worth the effort. Despite the pandemic that continues to complicate all of our lives, you, with the help of your teachers and administrators, finished the year with as much learning, collaboration, communication and celebration possible.” Attendees of the ceremonies included, Joseph Vicari, Freeholder Director, Stephen Scaturro, Vice President of the OCVTS Board of Education, Maureen Stankowitz, OCVTS Board member, Dr. Michael B. Maschi, Assistant Superintendent, and Frank J. Frazee, Business Administrator. The Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES) is a specialized high school centered around marine and environmental science. With a focus on math and science MATES students complete an independent research project as well as hands-on field work on the Barnegat Bay. The OCVTS Grunin Performing Arts Academy (PAA) is a comprehensive high school for students in Ocean County featuring four distinct majors: Audio Engineering, Dance, Theater, and Vocal. Traditionally, PAA students hold showcase performances in the fall, spring, and winter. In February 2020 PAA students showcased their talents in the musical Legally Blonde, held at the historic Strand Theater in Lakewood, NJ. The Academy of Law and Public Safety (ALPS) offers a unique and comprehensive foundation for students interested in a career in public safety. Our 2020 graduates successfully completed their Special Law Enforcement Officer training, Basic Telecommunications training and Emergency Medical Responder training. Many of this year’s graduates will be working this summer in Ocean County’s local beach communities as dispatchers and special ones within local departments. LEGAL ONE NJ is “the leading provider of education law workshops, online courses, and webinars for school leaders and teachers on critical legal issues. The PSA’s theme centers around the rights of transgendered students and how educators and staff members can support these students. The script itself was created with the intention to send out to teachers all over the country. After the script was completed, many hours were spent with the production team on creating the best plan for the PSA and the GPAA students. The production team included LEGAL ONE NJ’s Director of Legal Education and National Research David Nash, LEGAL ONE NJ’s Video Editor John Lynn, and GPAA’s Theatre Instructors Anthony Ciccotelli and Carolyn Little. Once the schedule was made, Ciccotelli and Little held auditions for the GPAA acting majors, GPAA alumni, and theatre professionals. A total of 22 GPAA students were selected to be a participant in the cast or crew for the production. After casting, filming began on the GPAA Campus during the month of December. GPAA students who chose not to act in the film, were able to work crew. They learned how to manage portable lights, a boom mic, and much, much more. Filming locations included classrooms, the Gia Prima Blackbox, and even the parking lots. Despite some bad weather and a campus-wide blackout, filming managed to persevere. For one particular scene, the school board meeting, we even had current GPAA families join us for the recording. After two weeks of filming a variety of shots, backed up by B roll, the film was complete. LEGAL ONE NJ is hoping to release the PSA in the upcoming months. • New Jersey SkillsUSA Hall of Fame Welcomes Gert Silsby in Recognition of Decades of Service

Gert Silsby was honored with induction into the New Jersey SkillsUSA Hall of Fame. The recognition comes as a testament to her unwavering dedication and substantial contributions to the SkillsUSA Association over the years. PROGRAM AREA \ COURSE OF STUDY MAY 10, 2024 New Jersey SkillsUSA Hall of Fame Welcomes Gert Silsby in Recognition of Decades of Service New Jersey SkillsUSA Hall of Fame Welcomes Gert Silsby in Recognition of Decades of Service Nicholas Spiech, OCVTS MAY 10, 2024 Trenton, New Jersey- In a heartfelt ceremony held on April 28th at the Cure Insurance Arena in Trenton, Gert Silsby was honored with induction into the New Jersey SkillsUSA Hall of Fame. The recognition comes as a testament to her unwavering dedication and substantial contributions to the SkillsUSA Association over the years. A Journey Through SkillsUSA Gert Silsby's journey with SkillsUSA began in 1985, back when the organization was known as the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA). Her initial role was that of a helper at the Ocean County Vocational Technical School’s (OCVTS) Navy Lakehurst Center, but she quickly expanded her involvement to much larger responsibilities. Over the decades, Gert has played a pivotal role in shaping the future of countless young professionals by judging local, regional, and state competitions, as well as serving as a judge at the National Action Skills competition. Beyond Judging Gert’s commitment to SkillsUSA extends well beyond her judging duties. She has been the coordinator for OCVTS's yearly participation in SkillsUSA, handling everything from national and state registrations to contest entries and bus assignments. Her organizational skills are also evident in her preparation of the now-famous “Grab and Go Bags” for all off-site competitions, ensuring students are always ready and equipped. Her meticulous nature further shines through in her management of uniform storage and distribution, demonstrating an unmatched level of dedication to the logistical needs of the organization. Moreover, serving as the "Chief" Administrative Assistant to the OCVTS Skills District Administrator and acting as a liaison between OCVTS and the New Jersey SkillsUSA team, Gert has been the glue holding many parts of the organization together. A Pillar of the Community Perhaps one of the most endearing images of Gert is of her overseeing the day's schedule from her official chair in the hotel lobby during the SkillsUSA National Leadership Conferences—a position she secured by virtue of being the earliest riser. Her role as the "Historian" for OCVTS Skills underscores her deep connection and long-standing service, marking her as the oldest participant in the program at OCVTS. What is SkillsUSA? SkillsUSA is a vital organization that partners with students, teachers, and industry leaders to build a competent American workforce. Through competitions and rigorous training, it helps students excel in their chosen fields. The mission of SkillsUSA is to empower its members to become world-class workers, leaders, and responsible citizens, enhancing the quality of America's future skilled workforce by developing a range of essential skills. A Legacy of Dedication The Hall of Fame award presented to Gert Silsby reads, “In recognition of your years of hard work and dedication in building the New Jersey SkillsUSA Association.” It is a fitting tribute to a woman whose life's work has been deeply intertwined with the betterment of technical and vocational education for the youth of New Jersey. Gert’s legacy is not just in the administrative tasks she managed so adeptly but in the lives of the students she helped mold into skilled professionals ready to take on the world. About Ocean County Vocational Technical School Ocean County Vocational Technical School provides an intensive and immersive educational experience aligned with the current and emerging demands of business, industry, and advanced education.
