  • MATES Wins 2026 Ocean County Mock Trial Championship

In a dramatic courtroom showdown, the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES) claimed the 2026 Ocean County Mock Trial Championship, overpowering Brick Memorial in a gripping final round at the Ocean County Courthouse. Competing in the prestigious Vincent J. Apruzzese Mock Trial Competition, the team delivered a commanding performance that secured the county title and propelled them into the Regional Finals. PROGRAM AREA \ COURSE OF STUDY February 25, 2026 MATES Wins 2026 Ocean County Mock Trial Championship MATES Wins 2026 Ocean County Mock Trial Championship OCVTS MATES, Jennifer Hudak February 25, 2026 OCEAN COUNTY, NEW JERSEY As anxious observers filed into Historic Courtroom 1 of the Ocean County Courthouse, there was a tangible buzz of excitement in the air. Two teams had battled fiercely in the county preliminary and semi-final rounds the previous Saturday, and they were now facing one another for the coveted title: Ocean County Mock Trial Champions. After a riveting two-hour trial, presided over by the Honorable Francis Hodgson and the Honorable Craig Wellerson, the prosecution team from the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES) emerged victorious over Brick Memorial’s defense. The MATES mock trial team has competed for eighteen years in the Vincent J. Apruzzese Mock Trial Competition sponsored by the NJ State Bar Foundation. This year’s case involved a swatting incident, a gaming club, and a defendant–Devon Ransom–who may or may not have made the 9-1-1 call from the Metro Perk coffee shop. Students, led by mock trial coach MATES Instructor Jennifer Hudak, take on the roles of attorneys and witnesses and must present the most compelling litigation to progress through rounds of competition. In total, the team advanced through four rounds of the competition to qualify for the Regional Playoffs. MATES students who participated are: prosecuting attorneys Isabella Sadsad and Dugan Tunney; defense attorneys Kealia Smith and Aiden Boehler; prosecution witnesses Colton Rahn, Tia Thomas, and Alexandra Kanterezhi-Gatto; and defense witnesses Kevin Nichols, Erin Morrisey, Ava Linton, and Tyler Steinbrunn. The NJ State Bar Foundation promotes two additional aspects of the competition: the Courtroom Artist Competition and the Courtroom New Reporter Competition. MATES has had student artists participate for the past eleven years, and this is the first year that students have taken part as courtroom reporters. This year’s artists were Nicole Palonnaya, Rachel Hellinger, Kataluna Buenvenida, and Tia Thomas. Student reporters were Amanda Mastrola and Emma Delhaas. In total, the students submitted over eleven sketches and two articles that will be critiqued by professionals and earn recognition ranging from Honorable Mention to First Place in the state (with an invitation to sketch or report at the national competition in Des Moines, Iowa). The team is extremely proud of its accomplishment, and after also dominating two single-elimination rounds in the Regional Playoffs, is currently working tirelessly to prepare for the Regional Finals to be held at the NJ Law Center in New Brunswick on March 18th. Coach Hudak would like to thank the students, staff, and administration for all their support over the years. A special thank you goes out to Attorney Coaches Bill Wright and Sasha Naro who work with the student attorneys and witnesses to perfect their courtroom skills. This truly has been a team effort! Classroom knowledge alone cannot fully prepare individuals for the complexities and challenges they may encounter on construction sites. By engaging in hands-on training, students gain a deep understanding of the tools, techniques, and safety protocols involved in various construction tasks. One exemplary initiative that highlights the significance of such training is the collaboration between Stavola and the Ocean County Vocational Technical School (OCVTS). Through industry development partnerships, Stavola generously continues to provide OCVTS students with the invaluable opportunity to learn and operate real heavy equipment machinery. This partnership not only exposed students to the latest technologies and industry standards but also allowed them to apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical setting. By bridging the gap between academia and the construction industry, these initiatives foster a skilled workforce and ensure that future professionals are well-prepared to tackle the demands of the construction field. The Heavy Equipment Operator Program (HEOP) is a program designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills required for the operation of heavy equipment in accordance with industry standards. The students will be able to recognize the technical competencies in the major classifications of heavy equipment. Students will be engaged in industry relevant, hands-on instruction that is aligned with the National Center for Construction Education Research (NCCER) Heavy Equipment Operations curriculum. Skills will be further developed through the use of state of the art in-class simulators and authentic learning opportunities in which students will operate actual machinery. Throughout the program students will be provided the opportunity to learn in the field through job shadowing experiences and qualified candidates may continue on to participate in cooperative education experiences with local employers. • OCVTS Leads the Charge on Unity Day to Help End Bullying

OCVTS stands together in helping to create a world without bullying! We stood together and wore orange on October 16 to show unity for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. PROGRAM AREA \ COURSE OF STUDY OCT 16, 2024 OCVTS Leads the Charge on Unity Day to Help End Bullying OCVTS Leads the Charge on Unity Day to Help End Bullying Nicholas Spiech, OCVTS OCT 16, 2024 The Ocean County Vocational Technical School District stands together in helping to create a world without bullying! We stood together and wore orange on October 16 to show unity for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion and to send a visible message that no child should ever experience bullying. Unity Day, started by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center as the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month continues to grow every year as a tangible representation of the universal message that our society wants to promote kindness, acceptance and inclusion to prevent bullying. Why unity? For years, bullying was justified with expressions such as, “Bullying is a natural part of childhood,” “Bullying makes kids tougher,” or “Bullying is a rite of passage.” The goal of Unity Day is to bring together youth, parents, educators, businesses, and community members across the nation to emphasize the message that bullying is not acceptable, and that all students deserve to be safe in school, online, and in the community. Why the color orange? Unity Day is celebrated in October, and orange is a color commonly identified with the month and the autumn season. It is also a color that is associated with safety and visibility. It is a color described as warm and inviting, and its vibrancy makes an impactful statement. Why just a day? The event provides a catalyst for everyone to come together with a visual statement that our actions matter not only on one day, but every day. One young student shared that he wished Unity Day could be every day. When asked why he replied: “So that every day everyone would be nicer to me and to each other.” Pictured- OCVTS Brick, Jackson, Grunin Performing Arts Academy, and Marine Academy of Technology & Environmental Science Help Spread Awareness| Get Involved & Start Planning Now View the free Unity Day Guide featuring large scale ideas to individual action. https://www.pacer.org/bullying/nbpm/pdf/unity-day-guide.pdf Previous Next OCVTS Hosts New Jersey SkillsUSA Marine Service Technology Championship Competition March 30, 2026 OCVTS Hosts New Jersey SkillsUSA Motorcycle Service Technology Championship Competition March 25, 2026 OCVTS Foundation’s 29th Annual International Chefs' Night Out Raises $85k to Benefit Ocean County Vo-Tech Students MARCH 11, 2026 MATES Wins 2026 Ocean County Mock Trial Championship February 25, 2026 OCVTS Grunin Performing Arts Academy Principal Honored as 2026 New Jersey Thespian Outstanding Administrator February 10, 2026 OCVTS Annual Open House Empowers CTE Students to Pursue High-Demand Careers February 9, 2026 Ocean County Vocational Technical School and Design 446 Launch Innovative Partnership December 3, 2025 OCVTS Culinary Arts Students Prepare 3,800 Thanksgiving Meals for Families in Need November 26, 2025 OCVTS Celebrates Eighth Student-Constructed Home and Its First Official Build as a Registered Home Builder in Ocean County November 19, 2025 Partnership Between OCVTS Audio Engineering Program and KEF Audio Launches Series of Immersive Audio Workshops October 28, 2025 The OCVTS Foundation’s 27th Annual Golf Outing Brings in $81k to Benefit Ocean County Trade School Students October 15, 2025 OCVTS Brick Campus Reveals a Fresh Modern Look and Culinary Program Enhancements During Ribbon Cutting Ceremony October 6, 2025 OCVTS Leads the Charge on Unity Day to Help End Bullying Nicholas Spiech, OCVTS OCT 16, 2024 OCVTS Leads the Charge on Unity Day to Help End Bullying Previous The Ocean County Vocational Technical School District stands together in helping to create a world without bullying!
