Marine Academy of Technology & Environmental Science PROGRAM AREA \ COURSE OF STUDY MARINE ACADEMY OF TECHNOLOGY & ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE MATES INFO FOR APPLICANTS MATES FOR THE APPLICANT The Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science is a public high school administered by the Ocean County Vocational Technical School district. MATES is designed to give its students a rigorous academic curriculum with concentration in the areas of math, science and technology. The school exists within the community to provide a challenging, unique, hands-on learning experience for students interested in pursuing a math or science-related career. The academy opened in September 2001 for students entering the ninth grade. STUDENT SELECTION AND ADMISSION Students are selected through a competitive application process and enter at the ninth grade level. Applicants must reside in Ocean County to be eligible for admission. All school districts in Ocean County are eligible to participate in sending applications to the program. ADMISSION To be eligible for admission the student should be enrolled in and successfully complete an eighth grade pro-gram that includes: English, math (Algebra I preferred), science, social studies and physical education. A Spanish I elective is also recommended, or a summer program equivalency will be required. TRANSPORTATION The student’s resident district will be responsible for transporting the student to MATES. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The school day runs from 7:30AM until 1:43PM. Classes are offered in a block time similar to a typical college program. Each semester students receive a different schedule. The course of study meets and exceeds the New Jersey Student Learning standards.

The event was a spectacular celebration of teamwork, unity, and friendly competition, bringing together staff members from various departments/buildings for a day of fun-filled activities and challenges. The day kicked off with an air of excitement as staff members geared up for over 11 thrilling team-building events organized with meticulous planning. Divided into six teams, the participants eagerly embraced the challenges that awaited them. The day's activities were not just about competition; they were about fostering bonds with peers, supporting each other as spectators, and simply having a blast together. Staff members had the chance to participate in a wide range of fun and competitive activities. The day was filled with energy as teams faced off in volleyball matches and relay races, while others tested their wits in a lively game of Family Feud. Root beer pong and darts added a lighthearted challenge, and for those seeking calm, a yoga session provided the perfect balance. Popular games like cornhole and a free throw competition kept the excitement going, while the hilarious Hungry, Hungry Hippo had everyone laughing. The event also featured karaoke for the musically inclined and a refreshing nature hike for those looking to enjoy the outdoors. Spectators added to the vibrant ambiance, lounging on lawn chairs, sporting sunglasses, and cheering passionately for their favorite teams. The sense of community was palpable, creating an environment where everyone felt a sense of belonging and shared purpose. A heartfelt thank you goes out to the OCVTS business partners who generously donated gift cards for the event's door prizes. These tokens of appreciation were made possible by the support of 16 dedicated business and industry leaders who collaborate with OCVTS to empower and prepare students for the future. Over 65 lucky staff members walked away with $2000 in gift cards from a diverse range of establishments, including hair salons, spas, local restaurants, fitness centers, gyms, department stores, online retailers, and much more. The event was made even more memorable by the Ocean County Foundation for Vocational Technical Education and the OCVTS Board of Education, whose generosity and unwavering support played a significant role in the success of the Staff Field Day. The event drew 144 golfers, 84 sponsors and more than 160 total attendees, including golfers and supporters of career and technical education, raising an impressive $81,525 to benefit students of the Ocean County Vocational Technical School District (OCVTS). Since 1998, the annual golf outing has brought together business, industry, and community partners who share a commitment to strengthening career and technical education in Ocean County. Their continued generosity helps ensure that OCVTS students have access to advanced training, modern equipment, and opportunities that prepare them for rewarding careers in high-demand fields. Golfers enjoyed a shotgun start and scramble format, followed by an evening awards dinner honoring first, second, and third-place teams along with contests for Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive. Lunch and dinner were elegantly prepared and served by OCVTS Culinary Arts students enrolled in the 10-Month Accelerated Culinary Arts Program. The program operates at Cuisine on the Green, a fully functioning restaurant and banquet facility where students gain real-world experience in a professional setting. Events like the Annual Golf Outing provide students with invaluable hands-on experience in large-scale catering and banquet service—skills essential for success in the hospitality and culinary industry. Hippe - OCVTS Academy of Law & Public Safety ~ When I was looking to start a second career, I considered several options, but continued to be drawn to teaching. I always loved training, coaching and mentoring others, and I could not think of a more rewarding way to spend the next chapter of my life. I am blessed to have found a home at my current school where the students truly make our building the special place that it is. They are motivated, polite, respectful and appreciative of what we do for them. Because of them, I look forward to going to work each day more than any other time in my 30+ year career. Despite the long hours and personal sacrifices, seeing the success of my students and helping them along their journeys makes this the most fulfilling position I have ever held. I would like to thank my family for their support, my co-workers for their continued assistance, and my district administrators for the opportunity to do this job every day. Trish DeAnni - OCVTS Brick Center ~ I am honored to have been chosen as our school’s teacher of the year as I work with some of the best teachers who instill creativity daily. Gabriella Grant - OCVTS Grunin Performing Arts Academy ~ It is very humbling to be selected as Teacher of the Year among all the incredible staff at the Grunin Performing Arts Academy. I started my career in education because I wanted to positively influence young people, which has proved tremendously fulfilling. This is largely due to a student’s capacity for growth and creativity, as well as a lack of limits and sense of adventure. My students inspire me far more than I ever will them. Their eager approach to new experiences is useful in changing my mind, and as I get older, I’m finding these necessary adjustments to be more difficult. Thankfully, my career allows for regular reflections on my own identity. It is with gratitude that I look back on the many mentors responsible for fostering my teaching skills in the classroom. I am supported daily by the significant efforts of the administration and staff at GPAA, and I look forward to each day to teach my unbelievably talented students. Jay B. Houle—OCVTS Jackson Center ~ It is a great honor that the Jackson Center has chosen me to be the Teacher of the year. My career starter in the Marine Corps, I learned a lot about managing and instructing fellow marines. I spent years working in the automotive field honing my skills, and decided it was time to pass the knowledge I gained and pursue teaching. In 2011 I started teaching Automotive Technology and again learned a lot, and realized this is what I was meant to do. In 2019 I came to the Jackson center to teach Automotive Servicing and to help students reach their goals of becoming a mechanic. Over the years I have seen many students be successful from what I taught them and makes this job worthwhile. I strive each and every day to turn out the best entry level mechanic and help the students to reach their dream. Jennifer Hudak - Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science ~ I have a sign on the wall in room 226B that reads: “My happy place is this classroom.” Although I purchased the small, wooden plaque a few years ago, its sentiment has rung true for most of my life. Whether sitting on a colorful rug reciting the days of the week at five years old or standing in front of a group of students while teaching the importance of the Oxford comma, I have always belonged in a classroom. My goal as an educator is for my students to enter my classroom and feel the same happiness and excitement that I do about making connections and sharing content. Every day, I am thankful that I work in a school where education is revered and students want to learn. I am blessed to have a family who understands and supports my passion for teaching, even when it means that I stay at school a few hours longer than I should. Teaching is not what I do; it’s who I am. John Fogerty - OCVTS Toms River Center ~ It is an honor to have been chosen as Teacher of the Year for Ocean County Vocational Technical School’s Toms River Center. I took the long way to finding the career that I was meant to be in. I spent years working in business and, while I was relatively successful, I sometimes felt like I was living someone else’s dream. So, I continued taking college classes while working full-time. I graduated from Stockton University in 2012 at 30 years old. However, it wasn’t until 2015 that I decided to finally pursue my dream of teaching. After a few substitute teaching jobs, I found myself at Ocean County Vocational Technical School. I never expected to be an English teacher at a vocational school, but once I started here in 2016, I quickly realized what a wonderful and unique opportunity it was. On a daily basis, I get to see students pursuing a passion they’ve found at such a young age. I’m thrilled to be here as a resource, assisting them on their journey to the career that they feel they are meant to be in. More than 80 female students from three counties studying construction trades gathered to connect with esteemed female industry leaders breaking down traditional barriers at a networking event. On Tuesday, October 15, 2024, more than 80 female students from Ocean, Monmouth, and Middlesex Counties, all enrolled in construction-related career training programs, gathered at the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore Program Activity Center to connect with esteemed industry leaders, breaking down traditional barriers and fostering a sense of empowerment and camaraderie. The event kicked off with an inspiring panel of five industry leaders who shared their powerful stories of determination and success. Carol Stillwell, Owner & President of Stillwell-Hansen, Inc.; Leigh-Ann Brannigan, Membership Director for the Associated Construction Contractors of NJ; Julia Howard, Senior Project Manager at Gilbane Building Co.; Cyndie Williams, Executive Director of the Carpenter Contractor Trust; and Tom De Bartolo, President of Monmouth & Ocean B&CTC and President and Business Manager of Local 27, each took the stage to offer unique insights into their respective careers. The panelists addressed a series of thought-provoking questions prepared by female construction trade students from Ocean County Vocational Technical School. Each panelist shared their perspectives on the challenges and opportunities in the construction industry, including the unique challenges faced by women in the field, providing valuable advice and inspiration during the Q&A session. The networking segment of the event offered an invaluable opportunity for students to connect with over 100 professionals from a wide array of sectors within the construction industry, including contractors, union representatives, project managers, apprentices, business agents, engineers, architects, business owners, utility companies, professional organizations, and much more. Students actively engaged with potential employers and industry leaders, asking questions, sharing their aspirations, and gaining insights into the realities of the profession. On Tuesday, October 15, 2024, more than 80 female students from Ocean, Monmouth, and Middlesex Counties, all enrolled in construction-related career training programs, gathered at the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore Program Activity Center to connect with esteemed industry leaders, breaking down traditional barriers and fostering a sense of empowerment and camaraderie. The event kicked off with an inspiring panel of five industry leaders who shared their powerful stories of determination and success. Carol Stillwell, Owner & President of Stillwell-Hansen, Inc.; Leigh-Ann Brannigan, Membership Director for the Associated Construction Contractors of NJ; Julia Howard, Senior Project Manager at Gilbane Building Co.; Cyndie Williams, Executive Director of the Carpenter Contractor Trust; and Tom De Bartolo, President of Monmouth & Ocean B&CTC and President and Business Manager of Local 27, each took the stage to offer unique insights into their respective careers. The panelists addressed a series of thought-provoking questions prepared by female construction trade students from Ocean County Vocational Technical School. Each panelist shared their perspectives on the challenges and opportunities in the construction industry, including the unique challenges faced by women in the field, providing valuable advice and inspiration during the Q&A session. The networking segment of the event offered an invaluable opportunity for students to connect with over 100 professionals from a wide array of sectors within the construction industry, including contractors, union representatives, project managers, apprentices, business agents, engineers, architects, business owners, utility companies, professional organizations, and much more. Students actively engaged with potential employers and industry leaders, asking questions, sharing their aspirations, and gaining insights into the realities of the profession. These students demonstrated remarkable skill and determination as they competed for top honors and the opportunity to represent New Jersey on the national stage. The competition was expertly coordinated by Jesse Dayton, the District Service Manager of Yamaha Motor Corporation, and Robert Berenwick, the Marine Service Technology Instructor of OCVTS, whose dedication was instrumental in every aspect of the event’s success. Jennifer Etzkorn, a school counselor from Ocean County Vocational High School, was selected as the 2022 Counselor of the County for Ocean County.
