Veolia North America awarded MATES with a generous donation in the amount of $20,000.00 that will allow them to further their conservation efforts with recovering derelict crab pots and to promote and distribute bycatch reduction devices (BRDs) for crab pots throughout the area. This project will help in the preservation of marine organisms and safeguarding the waterways and marine life in the Barnegat Bay. Marine debris can cause the death of a variety of marine organisms including diamondback terrapins and other finfish species (VIIMS 2009). Commercial and recreational crab pots are approximately 0.6 m x 0.6 m x 0.6 m (2 ft x 2 ft x 2ft) and most are vinyl-coated that are set and retrieved by a line and buoy system. Crab pots can become lost during the season if pots are abandoned, lost during storms, and/or accidentally cut by passing boats, or break for other reasons. Derelict crab pots will continue to kill marine organisms (marine crabs, turtles, and fish) as they are “lost” and therefore unchecked, so animals become trapped or entangled, and considered “marine debris.” The Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES), under the coordination of The Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey with partners including Stockton University (Stockton), and the local fishing community recovered over 2100 derelict crab pots between 2015 and 2019. However, the past few years, there are numerous derelict crab pots that are sitting in Barnegat Bay and more crab pots are being added each year. A survey conducted by Stockton University in 2018 suggested that there were 1500 crab pots alone between the Tunney-Mathis Bridge north to the Mantoloking Bridge. This generous donation from Veolia North America will allow us to retrieve derelict crab pots and other derelict fishing gear – MATES, Project Terrapin, and local fishermen will use side scan sonars to locate and retrieve gear over the months of December to March during the winters of 2022/2023 and 2023/2024. We also be able to purchase and distribute bycatch reduction devices (BRDs) to the community to help reduce non-targeted catch, and to maintain blue crab captures. BRDs will be available through some local crab pot retailers and partners such as Jenkinson’s Aquarium and the Long Beach Township Marine Field Station starting this spring. Look for our BRD educational displays at events starting this spring. On October 16, David Kroll, Vice President of KEF America, visited OCVTS to host the first workshop in the series, focusing on ATMOS Speaker Setup and Dolby Atmos sound design. Students participated in a hands-on session that introduced them to immersive audio concepts, including Pro Logic hearing, speaker positioning, installation, channel placement, and speaker test toning—skills directly tied to careers in the evolving audio, video, and film industries. They also assisted in installing two new Atmos-enabled audio mixing suites within OCVTS’s state-of-the-art, multi-studio recording facility. KEF Audio has generously donated over $33,000 worth of KEF Atmos equipment, upgrading OCVTS’s facilities to provide students with access to cutting-edge technologies used in professional sound for video, film, television, and spatial audio production. In addition, KEF has established a $13,500 Education Scholarship Fund for OCVTS Audio Engineering students over three academic years. These project-based scholarships will recognize excellence in Immersive Audio and Atmos Soundtrack (Audio + Video) projects, directly supporting the district’s mission to prepare students for continued education and success in rapidly evolving audio technology industry. This partnership also creates pathways for internships, mentorships, and potential career opportunities with KEF, its industry partners, and across the broader music, film, and media production landscape. Students from Full-Time, Shared-Time, and Adult Education Audio Programs, as well as participants in the Film Club and Tech Club, will benefit from the expanded opportunities and resources this collaboration brings. “We are thrilled to partner with KEF Audio to give our students access to real-world, cutting-edge experiences,” said Willam Bourke, Audio Engineering Instructor. “Through this collaboration, our Audio Engineering students are developing the technical expertise and creative confidence needed to excel in today’s audio and sound engineering environments.” To celebrate the kickoff workshop, KEF surprised students with apparel and merchandise giveaways, as well as three sets of Nothing Headphones—a newly released product born from KEF’s strategic collaboration with the audio technology company Nothing—awarded to students who demonstrated exceptional engagement and curiosity during the session. “KEF is excited about our partnership with OCVTS and the chance to connect with the next generation of audio and film makers at the start of their journey,” said David Kroll, Vice President of KEF America. “The high level of interest and engagement from the students during the workshop is a testament to the dedication and caliber of those enrolled in the Audio Engineering Program.” The OCVTS Audio Engineering Program continues to lead in providing students with innovative, hands-on experiences that align with industry trends—ensuring graduates remain current with evolving technologies and are well-prepared for future careers in the audio engineering industry. • New Jersey Performing Arts High School Makes History

The Grunin Performing Arts Academy (GPAA) is honored to have its fall drama, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, selected for the International Thespian Festival—the world's largest high school theatre event. GPAA is one of just eight schools worldwide and only the second in New Jersey to receive this honor. To make this opportunity a reality, GPAA must raise funds to cover travel and production costs. PROGRAM AREA \ COURSE OF STUDY FEB 23, 2025 New Jersey Performing Arts High School Makes History New Jersey Performing Arts High School Makes History OCVTS Grunin Performing Arts Academy FEB 23, 2025 Toms River, NJ – February 23, 2025 – The Ocean County Vocational Technical School’s (OCVTS) Grunin Performing Arts Academy (GPAA) is thrilled to announce that its fall drama production, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, has been selected to perform at the International Thespian Festival, the world's largest celebration of high school theatre. This prestigious event will take place at Indiana University Bloomington from June 22-27, 2025. GPAA, a public performing arts high school, located on the Ocean County College (OCC) campus in Toms River, NJ, is one of only eight schools, worldwide, and only the second high school in New Jersey, to receive this remarkable honor. The academy offers specialized majors in Theater, Vocal, Dance, and Audio Engineering, and provides dual enrollment opportunities with OCC, allowing students to earn their associates degrees alongside their high school diplomas. "This is an extraordinary achievement for our students and our academy," said Anthony Ciccotelli, director of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, "To be recognized on an international stage is a testament to the hard work, talent, and dedication of our students and faculty. We are incredibly proud and excited to share our production with a global audience." However, bringing this incredible opportunity to life requires significant financial support. GPAA must raise funds to cover the costs of transporting the cast, crew, chaperones, sets, costumes, and props to Indiana from New Jersey. It is estimated that it will cost over $100,000 to make this momentous occasion possible. To help achieve this goal, an anonymous donor has generously pledged to match up to $10,000 in donations, so GPAA is launching a comprehensive fundraising campaign, encouraging the community to support its journey. "We are calling on our community to rally behind these talented students," said Tierney Meeker, Principal of Grunin Performing Arts Academy. "Your support will not only make this dream a reality, but will also provide an invaluable experience for these young artists." The GPAA sincerely appreciates the ongoing support of our community and is eager to represent Ocean County and New Jersey at the International Thespian Festival. We are confident that, with the community's generous contributions, we will showcase the magic of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on an international platform.
