PROGRAM AREA \ COURSE OF STUDY OCT 18, 2023 OCVTS Takes Charge In The Fight To Help End Bullying OCVTS Takes Charge In The Fight To Help End Bullying Nicholas Spiech, OCVTS OCT 18, 2023 The Ocean County Vocational Technical School District stands together in helping to create a world without bullying! We stood together and wore orange on October 18 to show unity for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion and to send a visible message that no child should ever experience bullying. Unity Day, started by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center as the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month continues to grow every year as a tangible representation of the universal message that our society wants to promote kindness, acceptance and inclusion to prevent bullying. Why unity? For years, bullying was justified with expressions such as, “Bullying is a natural part of childhood,” “Bullying makes kids tougher,” or “Bullying is a rite of passage.” The goal of Unity Day is to bring together youth, parents, educators, businesses, and community members across the nation to emphasize the message that bullying is not acceptable, and that all students deserve to be safe in school, online, and in the community. Why the color orange? Unity Day is celebrated in October, and orange is a color commonly identified with the month and the autumn season. It is also a color that is associated with safety and visibility. It is a color described as warm and inviting, and its vibrancy makes an impactful statement. Why just a day? The event provides a catalyst for everyone to come together with a visual statement that our actions matter not only on one day, but every day. One young student shared that he wished Unity Day could be every day. We stood together and wore orange on October 18 to show unity for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion and to send a visible message that no child should ever experience bullying. Unity Day, started by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center as the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month continues to grow every year as a tangible representation of the universal message that our society wants to promote kindness, acceptance and inclusion to prevent bullying. Why unity? For years, bullying was justified with expressions such as, “Bullying is a natural part of childhood,” “Bullying makes kids tougher,” or “Bullying is a rite of passage.” The goal of Unity Day is to bring together youth, parents, educators, businesses, and community members across the nation to emphasize the message that bullying is not acceptable, and that all students deserve to be safe in school, online, and in the community. Why the color orange? Unity Day is celebrated in October, and orange is a color commonly identified with the month and the autumn season. It is also a color that is associated with safety and visibility. It is a color described as warm and inviting, and its vibrancy makes an impactful statement. Why just a day? The event provides a catalyst for everyone to come together with a visual statement that our actions matter not only on one day, but every day. On September 15, Ocean County Commissioners Frank Sadeghi, Robert Arace, and Jennifer Bacchione joined OCVTS for ribbon-cutting ceremonies at two transformative projects. The first celebration marked the Jackson Center Expansion Project—a 24,865 sq. ft. addition to our Jackson Center at 850 Toms River Road. The expansion features four brand-new state-of-the-art shops, four modern classrooms, and an upgraded security vestibule. With capacity for 192 students, the new space prepares students for high-demand careers in Electrical, Plumbing, Welding, and Medical Assisting. Students will gain hands-on training using industry-standard tools and credentials that lead directly to meaningful, good-paying jobs. This project was made possible in part through the Securing Our Children’s Future Bond Act. The second milestone is the relocation of the Academy of Law & Public Safety (ALPS). Beginning in Fall 2025, ALPS will move from its Waretown location into the newly renovated Russell Building at Ocean County College—currently home to our Pre-Nursing program. This relocation and renovation project not only enhances the partnership between OCVTS and Ocean County College, but it also opens the door for ALPS students to graduate with both a high school diploma and college credits. At ALPS, students experience a full-time, themed high school program where they receive hands-on training in law enforcement, homeland security, and public safety, while building a strong academic foundation and future career pathway. Importantly, the move will also allow OCVTS to launch three additional trades-related programs at the Waretown location, further expanding options for students interested in pursuing skilled career paths. Beyond its educational impact, this expansion holds broader significance for the local community. The projects are expected to create jobs, foster partnerships with local businesses in the construction and medical fields, and generate lasting economic benefits that will ripple throughout the region. Together, these initiatives reflect OCVTS’s mission to prepare students with the skills, training, and opportunities needed to succeed in today’s workforce—and to ensure Ocean County continues to thrive. It was a fun night of food and fundraising in Lacey Township on Monday night at the 25th Annual International Chefs Night Out. This year hosted at the beautiful Lacey Elks Lodge on Beach Avenue in Lacey. A nice crowd attended the 25th annual event and there was lots of food from all over Ocean County, including the culinary students at Ocean County Vocational-Technical School. Sue Moll and I were glad to represent 92.7 WOBM and Townsquare Media at this year's event, the first in two years due to the pandemic and it was great to see friends from the community, local businesses, and the schools. There were lots of foods to sample. Everything from starters to dessert and everything in between. So many different types of foods. All the vendors did a fantastic job and everyone enjoyed the night. This event is always unique because each year there are different types of foods and games to play. After eating folks were entertained with a fun gift auction with lots of cool prizes and of course proceeds going to the schools of OCVTS. The event saw over 350 trade school students engaging directly with 39 employers from the healthcare industry. These students, well-prepared with resumes in hand, had the opportunity to apply for positions and discuss potential career paths with healthcare industry professionals. The prestigious honor was presented during the New Jersey High School Thespian Festival, held on January 17 and 18, 2026. This recognition celebrates Meeker’s outstanding service, leadership, and unwavering support of educational theatre across New Jersey. The award highlights administrators who go above and beyond to champion arts education, empower students, and foster thriving theatre programs which are qualities that Meeker exemplifies daily at GPAA. The New Jersey High School Thespian Festival is the largest annual theatre event in the state, drawing students, educators, and industry professionals from across New Jersey. Over the course of two action-packed days, students participate in intensive workshops focused on performance and technical theatre, compete in Individual and Group Events, audition for college and university scholarships, and connect with theatrical vendors and institutions. The festival serves as a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and the future of theatre education. Tierney Meeker’s journey at the Grunin Performing Arts Academy is one marked by dedication, growth, and visionary leadership. She began her career at GPAA in 2004 as a social studies teacher, quickly becoming known for her commitment to students and the school community. In January 2020, she was appointed Vice Principal, where she played a key role in strengthening academic and artistic programs. In January 2024, Meeker proudly assumed the role of Principal, continuing her mission to collaborate closely with GPAA’s exceptional faculty and inspire students to achieve both artistic excellence and academic success. Among her most notable accomplishments is leading GPAA’s participation in Harry Potter at the International Thespian Festival in June 2025, a milestone achievement that showcased the academy’s talent on a national stage. At the 2026 New Jersey Thespian Festival, OCVTS Performing Arts Academy Thespian Troupe 6185 made an extraordinary showing, bringing 55 students and entering over 90 events. The prestigious honor was presented during the New Jersey High School Thespian Festival, held on January 17 and 18, 2026. This recognition celebrates Meeker’s outstanding service, leadership, and unwavering support of educational theatre across New Jersey. The award highlights administrators who go above and beyond to champion arts education, empower students, and foster thriving theatre programs which are qualities that Meeker exemplifies daily at GPAA. The New Jersey High School Thespian Festival is the largest annual theatre event in the state, drawing students, educators, and industry professionals from across New Jersey. Over the course of two action-packed days, students participate in intensive workshops focused on performance and technical theatre, compete in Individual and Group Events, audition for college and university scholarships, and connect with theatrical vendors and institutions. Tierney Meeker’s journey at the Grunin Performing Arts Academy is one marked by dedication, growth, and visionary leadership. She began her career at GPAA in 2004 as a social studies teacher, quickly becoming known for her commitment to students and the school community. In January 2020, she was appointed Vice Principal, where she played a key role in strengthening academic and artistic programs. This prestigious event brought together top high school students from across the state to showcase their expertise in motorcycle mechanics, diagnostics, and repair. SkillsUSA is a national organization dedicated to equipping students with the leadership, teamwork, and technical skills necessary for career success. As a cornerstone of career and technical education, SkillsUSA fosters workforce development by connecting students with industry professionals and providing opportunities for hands-on learning. As part of the New Jersey SkillsUSA Championships, motorcycle service competitors participated in hands-on technical challenges that showcased their skills in diagnosing and troubleshooting technical issues. Working with a KTM 50 SX Pro high-performance two-stroke motocross bike, students completed tasks such as compression testing, electrical diagnostics, wheel inspection, and wheel assembly runout measurement. They also performed various precision measurements, including piston ring thickness, spark plug gap, and valve spring free length, along with component and parts identification—all while adhering to strict safety procedures. With more than 114 career and technical skill events held statewide, the competition serves as a gateway for students to advance to the highly anticipated National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC), taking place in Atlanta, GA, from June 1–5, 2026. This year, OCVTS proudly fielded Jake Wnek as a competitor in the Motorcycle Service Technology category. Additionally, Cumberland County Technical Education Center (CCTEC) was represented by Denise Hernandez, and Jayden Rodriguez as competitors. These students demonstrated remarkable skill and determination as they competed for top honors and the opportunity to represent New Jersey on the national stage. Hippe - OCVTS Academy of Law & Public Safety ~ When I was looking to start a second career, I considered several options, but continued to be drawn to teaching. I always loved training, coaching and mentoring others, and I could not think of a more rewarding way to spend the next chapter of my life. I am blessed to have found a home at my current school where the students truly make our building the special place that it is. They are motivated, polite, respectful and appreciative of what we do for them. Because of them, I look forward to going to work each day more than any other time in my 30+ year career. Despite the long hours and personal sacrifices, seeing the success of my students and helping them along their journeys makes this the most fulfilling position I have ever held. I would like to thank my family for their support, my co-workers for their continued assistance, and my district administrators for the opportunity to do this job every day. Trish DeAnni - OCVTS Brick Center ~ I am honored to have been chosen as our school’s teacher of the year as I work with some of the best teachers who instill creativity daily. I began my career as an elementary special education teacher in 1993. I have been teaching high school students at OCVTS since 1999 and I have held different teaching positions within the special education department. For several years, I taught math to special needs students in their prospective trades. I encourage my students to persevere and watch their amazement when they understand a difficult lesson. I now teach Career Dynamics which is a transition program for special needs young adults. I love coming to school and seeing my students grow and improve their skills. There are countless learning opportunities to give my students each day as they work. My goal is to help my students become productive citizens and independent adults. Gabriella Grant - OCVTS Grunin Performing Arts Academy ~ It is very humbling to be selected as Teacher of the Year among all the incredible staff at the Grunin Performing Arts Academy. I started my career in education because I wanted to positively influence young people, which has proved tremendously fulfilling. This is largely due to a student’s capacity for growth and creativity, as well as a lack of limits and sense of adventure. My students inspire me far more than I ever will them. Their eager approach to new experiences is useful in changing my mind, and as I get older, I’m finding these necessary adjustments to be more difficult. Thankfully, my career allows for regular reflections on my own identity. It is with gratitude that I look back on the many mentors responsible for fostering my teaching skills in the classroom. I am supported daily by the significant efforts of the administration and staff at GPAA, and I look forward to each day to teach my unbelievably talented students. Jay B. Houle—OCVTS Jackson Center ~ It is a great honor that the Jackson Center has chosen me to be the Teacher of the year. My career starter in the Marine Corps, I learned a lot about managing and instructing fellow marines. I spent years working in the automotive field honing my skills, and decided it was time to pass the knowledge I gained and pursue teaching. In 2011 I started teaching Automotive Technology and again learned a lot, and realized this is what I was meant to do. In 2019 I came to the Jackson center to teach Automotive Servicing and to help students reach their goals of becoming a mechanic. Over the years I have seen many students be successful from what I taught them and makes this job worthwhile. I strive each and every day to turn out the best entry level mechanic and help the students to reach their dream. Jennifer Hudak - Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science ~ I have a sign on the wall in room 226B that reads: “My happy place is this classroom.” Although I purchased the small, wooden plaque a few years ago, its sentiment has rung true for most of my life. Whether sitting on a colorful rug reciting the days of the week at five years old or standing in front of a group of students while teaching the importance of the Oxford comma, I have always belonged in a classroom. My goal as an educator is for my students to enter my classroom and feel the same happiness and excitement that I do about making connections and sharing content. Every day, I am thankful that I work in a school where education is revered and students want to learn. I am blessed to have a family who understands and supports my passion for teaching, even when it means that I stay at school a few hours longer than I should. Teaching is not what I do; it’s who I am. John Fogerty - OCVTS Toms River Center ~ It is an honor to have been chosen as Teacher of the Year for Ocean County Vocational Technical School’s Toms River Center. I took the long way to finding the career that I was meant to be in. I spent years working in business and, while I was relatively successful, I sometimes felt like I was living someone else’s dream. So, I continued taking college classes while working full-time. I graduated from Stockton University in 2012 at 30 years old. However, it wasn’t until 2015 that I decided to finally pursue my dream of teaching. After a few substitute teaching jobs, I found myself at Ocean County Vocational Technical School. I never expected to be an English teacher at a vocational school, but once I started here in 2016, I quickly realized what a wonderful and unique opportunity it was. On a daily basis, I get to see students pursuing a passion they’ve found at such a young age. I’m thrilled to be here as a resource, assisting them on their journey to the career that they feel they are meant to be in.
