This event, recognized as the largest gathering of America's future skilled workforce, brought together thousands of students, instructors, business partners, and administrators to celebrate excellence in career and technical education. The National Leadership and Skills Conference provided an incredible opportunity for Ocean County Vocational Technical School students to showcase their talents and skills on a national level. The event fostered valuable interactions with other members of SkillsUSA, allowing students to broaden their network and gain exposure to different perspectives within their fields. With over 16,000 attendees in total, including 6,000 competitors participating in 115 diverse competitions, the conference served as a platform for students to develop their leadership abilities while learning about new technologies and advancements in their respective industries. The presence of hundreds of business and industry representatives enriched the event, providing students with invaluable industry experience and insights. Ocean County Vocational Technical School students made an impressive mark at the national level competition, where they competed against 6,000 participants. The school is proud to announce that six of its students achieved top 10 rankings. The Crime Scene Investigation Team of Lillion Bartlinski, Sarahy Gaspar, and Kathleen Lopez earned an impressive Silver medal 2nd place. Sean Grimste’s excellence in the Marine Service Technology competition secured him 3rd place and a Bronze medal. Emily Wilczek's remarkable talent in Extemporaneous Speech earned her a commendable 4th place. Jordan Kosich and Michael Veshela showcased their talents in their respective competitions, Advertising Design and Photography, while Austin Jones showed off his skills in the Job Demo Open competition. Ocean County Vocational Technical Schools also celebrates Cleatus Oates for an outstanding performance in the Related Technical Math competition, earning him a spot in the top 10, though placement results are currently pending. Students and staff at the OCVTS Brick Center partnered again this year with Fulfill, formerly known as the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean County, and RWJ Barnabas Community Medical Center to prepare meals for those in need this Thanksgiving. Over 3,500 meals will be distributed. PROGRAM AREA \ COURSE OF STUDY NOV 21, 2023 OCVTS Feed the Need 2023 Prepares Over 3500 Meals for Local Families OCVTS Feed the Need 2023 Prepares Over 3500 Meals for Local Families OCVTS Administration NOV 21, 2023 BRICK, NEW JERSEY Culinary Arts students and staff at the Ocean County Vocational Technical School’s Brick Center partnered again this year with Fulfill, formerly known as the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean County, and RWJ Barnabas Community Medical Center to prepare meals for those in need this Thanksgiving. Over 3,500 meals will be distributed through various local social service agencies such as Preferred Behavioral Health, DCCP, Inspire NJ, Golden Opportunities Outreach, and numerous local churches. Culinary Arts students from the Brick Center, under the direction of their instructors, prepare and roast over 450 turkeys, as well as preparing traditional side dishes including: mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, stuffing, and gravy. In addition, several OCVTS Culinary Arts graduates will return to the Brick Center to lend a helping hand with this much needed community service. Many of these graduates who are currently employed in the Culinary field take time off from their work schedule in order to volunteer to be part of this extraordinary project. Massive assembly lines of students package the meals and prepare them to be distributed over several days and it is truly impressive to witness. Fundraising efforts through the OCVTS Foundation, combined with the generosity of Fulfill, RWJ Barnabas Health, and financial contributions from the public fund this annual community service project which began over 20 years ago. Fulfill provides all of the turkeys, RWJ Barnabas Community Medical Center provides all of the additional food items needed to prepare the meals, and the Ocean County Foundation for Vocational Technical Education provides the packaging and containers needed for distributing these meals. The event recognized the dedication and achievement of apprentice students who successfully completed OCVTS’s rigorous four-year apprenticeship training programs. OCVTS apprenticeship programs require students to complete 576 hours of trade-related classroom instruction in conjunction with 8,000 hours of on-the-job training with an employer sponsor. This structured approach prepares students for skilled careers in the trades while promoting academic and professional excellence. The ceremony was held before a full audience of family, friends, and supporters, and was led by Jeremy Dusza, Adult Education Principal and Apprenticeship Coordinator. A total of 114 graduates were honored for completing training in the Electrical, Plumbing, and Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC-R) programs. Graduates received official Certificates of Completion from OCVTS, and several have also achieved Registered Apprentice status through the United States Department of Labor. In addition to the certificate presentations, select students were recognized for exceptional academic achievement and outstanding on-the-job performance. Awards such as Perfect Attendance and the Outstanding Apprentice Award were presented by district leadership, including Stephen Scaturro, President of the OCVTS Board of Education; Karen Homiek, OCVTS Superintendent; and Michael Maschi, Assistant Superintendent. The pride and enthusiasm were evident as school officials, board members, family, and friends celebrated the accomplishments of these future industry professionals. The New Home Construction program held a groundbreaking ceremony marking the official start of its 2025–2026 new home project. This build represents the eighth student-constructed home produced by the program since its launch in 2014 and is the school’s first official build as a Registered Home Builder. PROGRAM AREA \ COURSE OF STUDY November 19, 2025 OCVTS Celebrates Eighth Student-Constructed Home and Its First Official Build as a Registered Home Builder in Ocean County OCVTS Celebrates Eighth Student-Constructed Home and Its First Official Build as a Registered Home Builder in Ocean County Nicholas Spiech, OCVTS November 19, 2025 Berkeley Township, NJ — On November 13, the Ocean County Vocational Technical School (OCVTS) held a groundbreaking ceremony on Gladney Avenue in Bayville, marking the official start of its 2025–2026 New Home Construction Career Training Program project. This build represents the eighth student-constructed home produced by the program since its launch in 2014 and is the school’s first official build as a Registered Home Builder in Ocean County, underscoring the district’s long-standing commitment to hands-on, industry-aligned construction trades education. The event celebrated not only the beginning of a new residential build but also the strength of OCVTS’ industry partnerships, the commitment of community stakeholders, and the powerful real-world training opportunities that define the district’s career and technical education trade programs. This year’s project, led by New Home Construction Instructor Skip Peters, represents the continued growth of a community-supported initiative that gives students the rare opportunity to build a full-scale home from the ground up. Students enrolled in the program will complete every phase of construction, including site preparation and grading, masonry, framing, roofing, decking, drywall installation, and all interior and exterior finishing. They will work alongside licensed instructors and industry professionals, developing high-demand skills and gaining direct exposure to real jobsite expectations. The mechanical phases will be completed by OCVTS’ Apprentice Program students in Electrical, Plumbing, and HVAC, showcasing the district’s collaborative, cross-disciplinary approach to workforce training. This year’s home—an approximately 1,800-square-foot, single-story residence with three bedrooms and two full bathrooms—is being constructed on land generously donated to OCVTS. This opportunity came to OCVTS through the vision of Board Member Ron Rosetto and the generosity of John and Priscilla Oughton, who donated the lot. The goal was to give students a hands-on opportunity to apply their home-building skills while helping a local family achieve homeownership — all while providing the district with a sustainable method of cost recovery to continue delivering real-world vocational training. Once completed, the home will be sold, with all proceeds reinvested to purchase the next project site, ensuring that future classes of trade students benefit from this immersive, real-world, skill-building career-focused learning experience. The ceremony underscored the vital role of donors, supporters, county commissioners, board of education members and business partners who make this project possible each year. OCVTS expressed deep appreciation for the companies and community organizations whose contributions of funding, building materials, and supplies directly enhance student learning and strengthen the skilled trades pipeline. Industry partners including Michael J. Wright Construction, Lennar NJ/NY, All County Exteriors, Universal Supply, QXO, UFP Industries, GAF, CertainTeed, Ferguson, Good Friend Electric, Pitbull Securities, Esposito Construction, and the Ocean County Foundation for Vocational Technical Education have demonstrated exemplary support for the program. In a significant show of commitment earlier this year, Lennar NJ/NY donated $100,000 to the Ocean County Foundation for Vocational and Technical Education to help expand and enhance Ocean County Vocational Technical School’s construction trades training program across Ocean County. The groundbreaking highlighted the collective belief that when education, industry, and community come together, remarkable opportunities emerge for students. The New Home Construction project continues to stand as a model of applied learning—where students gain confidence, build marketable skills, and experience the importance of teamwork, precision, problem-solving, and professionalism in a real construction environment. Each project empowers students to enter the workforce with a strong foundation of technical knowledge and job-ready experience that sets them apart in the competitive construction and trades industries. The OCVTS New Home Construction training program, offered at the Waretown campus, is a 10-month, full-time accelerated program designed for adult learners preparing to enter the construction workforce. The curriculum includes extensive safety training, blueprint reading, layout, construction mathematics, framing, roofing, sheathing, siding, trim work, window and door installation, stair construction, drywall, insulation, ceilings, kitchen cabinets and flooring. Students earn their OSHA 10-hour Hazard Recognition certification and CPR/AED First Aid certification. Through OCVTS’ longstanding partnerships with local businesses, manufacturers, and construction firms, students apply their skills on-site at an active home build—an experience few training programs offer at this scale. As construction begins on the 2025–2026 home build, OCVTS celebrates the continued support of the Ocean County community and the shared commitment to preparing the region’s next generation of skilled builders. NEW HOME CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM 10 MONTHS / WARETOWN / ADULT STUDENTS / 5 DAYS PER WEEK MON - FRI 8:00AM - 1:00PM In response to a growing demand for skilled construction workers, the OCVTS New Home Construction program was developed as an accelerated training program for adults. Curriculum includes: extensive safety training, use of hand and power tools, blueprint reading, layout, industry-related mathematics, skills in framing, roofing, sheathing, siding, door and window installation, staircases, drywall installation, insulation, trim work, ceilings and floors. Students will receive the 10-hour OSHA Hazard Recognition Training Pro-gram as well as CPR/AED First Aid training. Through ongoing partnerships with outside agencies, students receive real-world, hands-on experience in all phases of construction as they work on-site at a selected home construction site in Ocean County. This 10-month, full-time program is open to adults 18 and older with a high school diploma or GED. Classes Begin in September with June graduation. This build represents the eighth student-constructed home produced by the program since its launch in 2014 and is the school’s first official build as a Registered Home Builder in Ocean County, underscoring the district’s long-standing commitment to hands-on, industry-aligned construction trades education. The event celebrated not only the beginning of a new residential build but also the strength of OCVTS’ industry partnerships, the commitment of community stakeholders, and the powerful real-world training opportunities that define the district’s career and technical education trade programs. This year’s project, led by New Home Construction Instructor Skip Peters, represents the continued growth of a community-supported initiative that gives students the rare opportunity to build a full-scale home from the ground up. Students enrolled in the program will complete every phase of construction, including site preparation and grading, masonry, framing, roofing, decking, drywall installation, and all interior and exterior finishing. They will work alongside licensed instructors and industry professionals, developing high-demand skills and gaining direct exposure to real jobsite expectations. The mechanical phases will be completed by OCVTS’ Apprentice Program students in Electrical, Plumbing, and HVAC, showcasing the district’s collaborative, cross-disciplinary approach to workforce training. This year’s home—an approximately 1,800-square-foot, single-story residence with three bedrooms and two full bathrooms—is being constructed on land generously donated to OCVTS. This opportunity came to OCVTS through the vision of Board Member Ron Rosetto and the generosity of John and Priscilla Oughton, who donated the lot. The goal was to give students a hands-on opportunity to apply their home-building skills while helping a local family achieve homeownership — all while providing the district with a sustainable method of cost recovery to continue delivering real-world vocational training. Once completed, the home will be sold, with all proceeds reinvested to purchase the next project site, ensuring that future classes of trade students benefit from this immersive, real-world, skill-building career-focused learning experience. The ceremony underscored the vital role of donors, supporters, county commissioners, board of education members and business partners who make this project possible each year. OCVTS expressed deep appreciation for the companies and community organizations whose contributions of funding, building materials, and supplies directly enhance student learning and strengthen the skilled trades pipeline. Industry partners including Michael J. Wright Construction, Lennar NJ/NY, All County Exteriors, Universal Supply, QXO, UFP Industries, GAF, CertainTeed, Ferguson, Good Friend Electric, Pitbull Securities, Esposito Construction, and the Ocean County Foundation for Vocational Technical Education have demonstrated exemplary support for the program. In a significant show of commitment earlier this year, Lennar NJ/NY donated $100,000 to the Ocean County Foundation for Vocational and Technical Education to help expand and enhance Ocean County Vocational Technical School’s construction trades training program across Ocean County. The groundbreaking highlighted the collective belief that when education, industry, and community come together, remarkable opportunities emerge for students. The New Home Construction project continues to stand as a model of applied learning—where students gain confidence, build marketable skills, and experience the importance of teamwork, precision, problem-solving, and professionalism in a real construction environment. Each project empowers students to enter the workforce with a strong foundation of technical knowledge and job-ready experience that sets them apart in the competitive construction and trades industries. The OCVTS New Home Construction training program, offered at the Waretown campus, is a 10-month, full-time accelerated program designed for adult learners preparing to enter the construction workforce. The curriculum includes extensive safety training, blueprint reading, layout, construction mathematics, framing, roofing, sheathing, siding, trim work, window and door installation, stair construction, drywall, insulation, ceilings, kitchen cabinets and flooring. Students earn their OSHA 10-hour Hazard Recognition certification and CPR/AED First Aid certification. Through OCVTS’ longstanding partnerships with local businesses, manufacturers, and construction firms, students apply their skills on-site at an active home build—an experience few training programs offer at this scale. As construction begins on the 2025–2026 home build, OCVTS celebrates the continued support of the Ocean County community and the shared commitment to preparing the region’s next generation of skilled builders. PROGRAM AREA \ COURSE OF STUDY JULY 6, 2022 OCVTS FCCLA Finalists Place at National Conference in San Diego OCVTS FCCLA Finalists Place at National Conference in San Diego Nicholas Spiech, OCVTS JULY 6, 2022 Students from the Fashion Design and Merchandising program proudly represented New Jersey and the Ocean County Vocational Technical School at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Leadership Conference held in San Diego on June 28 through July 3. Our district is extremely proud of their hard work and dedication. They pushed themselves out of their comfort zones, put themselves out there, and made new friends from across state and the nation. The students were professional, energetic, and engaged throughout the entire event, truly making the most of this wonderful opportunity provided to them. “It was such a pleasure to travel with them and see them grow in many ways. We look forward to another successful year with FCCLA. The students are already planning next years projects,” said master adviser Carey Gliddon. The week’s events concluded with the Awards Ceremony, where many of the nation’s top finishers received scholarships, tools, or other prizes related to their career fields in additional to their medals and national recognition. Carey has been recognized as a 2022 Master Adviser Award recipient.  Award recipients are recognized for advising an affiliated chapter for a minimum of three years, promoting the organization, operating an integrated chapter with a balanced program of work, facilitating youth-centered activities, and keeping abreast of new happenings within the organization. Nationwide there are over 6,000-chapter advisers. Students read poems, performed songs, danced and came together as a community to share their expressions and interpretations of all forms of love. The GSA also provided pronoun stickers and handmade bracelets to every student who wanted to openly express their gender identity and personal beliefs. We look forward to making this a yearly celebration of love at GPAA as the event was incredibly successful and allowed students additional opportunities to showcase their performance majors for the school community. Students read poems, performed songs, danced and came together as a community to share their expressions and interpretations of all forms of love. The GSA also provided pronoun stickers and handmade bracelets to every student who wanted to openly express their gender identity and personal beliefs. We look forward to making this a yearly celebration of love at GPAA as the event was incredibly successful and allowed students additional opportunities to showcase their performance majors for the school community. The project, made possible through community and foundation support, reflects a strong commitment to student success and modern learning environments. PROGRAM AREA \ COURSE OF STUDY October 6, 2025 OCVTS Brick Campus Reveals a Fresh Modern Look and Culinary Program Enhancements During Ribbon Cutting Ceremony OCVTS Brick Campus Reveals a Fresh Modern Look and Culinary Program Enhancements During Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Nicholas Spiech, OCVTS October 6, 2025 Brick, NJ — October 6, 2025 — The Ocean County Vocational Technical School District (OCVTS) celebrated a remarkable transformation at its Brick Campus with a ribbon-cutting ceremony unveiling a newly renovated exterior and updated dining space. The project has turned an aging facility into a clean, welcoming, and inspiring environment—one that mirrors the pride, professionalism, and excellence that define the district’s programs and students. Thanks to the generosity of the H. Hovnanian Foundation, and the steadfast support of the Ocean County Board of Commissioners and county funding, the Brick Campus now stands as a visible symbol of Ocean County’s ongoing investment in career and technical education. “Vocational education thrives when we invest not only in programs and instruction, but also in the environments where learning takes place. This project is a visible reminder that our students matter, their work matters, and their futures matter. At OCVTS, we also have support from our Ocean County Vocational Board of Education, The Ocean County Vocational Foundation and the many industry partners that believe in our mission,” — Karen L. Homiek, Superintendent of OCVTS The Brick Campus renovation project encompassed comprehensive exterior and interior improvements designed to modernize the facility and enhance both functionality and appearance. Exterior upgrades include new metal panel siding on the main facade and front entrance, energy-efficient windows and doors, and enhanced landscaping. The redesign also features a new paver courtyard with seating, lighting, hardscape elements, and new flagpoles. A newly constructed canopy and sidewalks now lead to the main entrance, while the remainder of the building has been repainted to match the refreshed front facade. New signage, including a digital reader board, adds a modern and professional touch to the campus. Interior renovations focused on improving safety and ambiance, introducing a new security vestibule, a separate exterior entrance to the dining room, and an ADA-compliant unisex restroom. The dining room was reimagined with upgraded finishes, including coffered ceilings, LED lighting, and refreshed paint—creating a warm, comfortable space for students, staff, and restaurant-goers. The newly updated dining space plays a vital role in the school’s Culinary Arts program, serving as both a classroom and a fully functional restaurant. In this space, students gain hands-on experience in all aspects of the culinary industry—from food preparation to professional service—by operating “A Touch of Class,” the school’s on-site dining room. It’s a setting where classroom learning meets real-world experience, allowing students to showcase their skills and creativity to the community. The Ocean County Vocational Technical School District extends heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed to this milestone project and joined in the celebration.
